  5. Today I finally did something I've been meaning to do for over a decade, kept saying I was going to do it, but today it finally got done. I put in an application for my very first passport. I should have it in hand in 4 to 6 weeks. If nothing else, I can now go to Canada again if I wish to. It will also give me more travel mobility. So today I'm quite proud of myself. #Accomplishment

  7. A quotation from Cicero

MARCUS: As a field, though fertile, cannot yield a harvest without cultivation, no more can the mind without learning.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) Roman orator, statesman, philosopher

  9. What Did I Accomplish Today?

    What is the
    measure
    of a
    good day?

    Accomplishment
    can be a strange
    idol.
    It promises
    peace
    after one more
    task,
    one more sermon,
    one more song,
    one more post,
    one more
    finished
    thing.

    But then
    the day
    ends,
    and my soul
    still has to
    live
    with itself.

    Here in the
    twilight,
    rather than
    asking
    what I have
    done,
    a better
    measure
    might be:

    Did I become
    more free today?

    Did I become
    less bitter?

    Did I tell
    the truth?

    Did I release
    what was
    not mine
    to carry?

    Did I move
    even slightly
    toward
    love?

    A clear mind
    and
    a better heart
    may be
    holier than
    a completed
    checklist.

    So maybe
    my evening prayer
    is simply this:

    Lord,
    I release the day.
    I release what I finished
and what I failed to finish.
    Clear my mind.
    Soften my heart.
Let me sleep as one who is loved,
not as one who must prove his worth.
    Amen

  10. A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

The weakest living creature, by concentrating his powers on a single object, can accomplish something: the strongest, by dispensing his over many, may fail to accomplish anything. The drop, by continually falling, bores its passage through the hardest rock; the hasty torrent rushes over it with hideous uproar, and leaves no trace behind.

Plus, the first team to win the cup:
    - at home
    - back-to-back
    - three times

And Bumrah's bowling: 4/15 in 4 overs? In a T20? Finals no less? That's test match figures. Just unreal.

  23. A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson

In the life of the artist there need be no hour without its pleasure. I take the author, with whose career I am best acquainted; and it is true he works in a rebellious material, and that the act of writing is cramped and trying both to the eyes and the temper; but remark him in his study, when matter crowds upon him and words are not wanting — in what a continual series of small successes time flows by; with what a sense of power as of one moving mountains, he marshals his petty characters; with what pleasures, both of the ear and eye, he sees his airy structure growing on the page; and how he labours in a craft to which the whole material of his life is tributary, and which opens a door to all his tastes, his loves, his hatreds, and his convictions, so that what he writes is only what he longed to utter. He may have enjoyed many things in this big, tragic playground of the world; but what shall he have enjoyed more fully than a morning of successful work? Suppose it ill paid: the wonder is it should be paid at all. Other men pay, and pay dearly, for pleasures less desirable.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, novelist, poet
Essay (1888-09), “A Letter to a Young Gentleman Who Proposes to Embrace the Career of Art,” Scribner’s Magazine, Vol. 4, No. 3

  37. A quotation from Victor Hugo

It is one of the most difficult yet necessary things in life to learn to disdain. Disdain protects and crushes. It is a breastplate and a club. You have enemies? Why, it is the story of every man who has done a great deed or created a new idea. It is the cloud which thunders around everything, which shines. Fame must have enemies, as light must have gnats. Do not bother yourself about it; disdain. Keep your mind serene as you keep your life clear. Do not give your enemies the satisfaction of thinking that they cause you grief or pain. Be happy, be cheerful, be disdainful, be firm.

Soyez content, soyez joyeux, soyez dédaigneux, soyez fort.]

    Victor Hugo (1802-1885) French writer
Diary (1845-12-07), “Villemain,” Things Seen [Choses Vues], Vol. 1 (1887)

  39. A quotation from Samuel Johnson

Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes, and seeing them gratified. He that labours in any great or laudable undertaking, has his fatigues first supported by hope, and afterwards rewarded by joy; he is always moving to a certain end, and when he has attained it, an end more distant invites him to a new pursuit.

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English writer, lexicographer, critic
Essay (1753-11-27), The Adventurer, No. 111

  40. A quotation from Eric Hoffer

There are many who find a good alibi far more attractive than an achievement. For an achievement does not settle anything permanently. We still have to prove our worth anew each day: we have to prove that we are as good today as we were yesterday. But when we have a valid alibi for not achieving anything we are fixed, so to speak, for life. Moreover, when we have an alibi for not writing a book, painting a picture, and so on, we have an alibi for not writing the greatest book and not painting the greatest picture. Small wonder that the effort expended and the punishment endured in obtaining a good alibi often exceed the effort and grief requisite for the attainment of a most marked achievement.

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
Passionate State of Mind, Aphorism 181 (1955)
