And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
    And when I'm feelin' blue
A guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You've helped me along, makin' me strong

  2. Was a 1967 album cut that for some reason, wasn’t released as a single then. Someone wisely decided to release it as a single in ‘70 and went to the top of the Billboard charts in the U.S. Because it’s just that good. There’s your useless rock trivia for the evening. This particular mix is just a wee bit longer than the original.

  3. In today’s edition of “Live and learn:” when I hear it these days, I’m reminded of the asshole who was my second wife; not long after my oldest boy was KIA in Iraq, she asked me one day when I broke down not long after his funeral “When are you gonna get over him?” We weren’t married when she did that and then the survivor benefits kicked in and all of a sudden, she wanted to get married. Jesus, THAT was a HUGE mistake. Oof da.

  4. What the fuck ever - found an extended mix. It just … kicks in its own little way. Humor me - I’m just an old guy enjoying the evening on deck.

  5. When your seven year-old granddaughter is playing on the trampoline and she starts singing “shoo be do be do wop wop wop do wop” and it brings a tune to mind.

  6. Heard this one today for the first time in a looooong time. I know the late Eric Carmen had a somewhat successful solo career in the late 80s but I personally prefer his work with The Raspberries.

  7. At one point during The Little River Band concert tonight the guys gathered around a microphone and sang a cappella the chorus to a few songs by different artists each one had musical association with of some sort or another. When they got to the chorus for this tune, one my favorite tunes by The Hollies, I belted this one out. In tune. I was surprised I could carry it as well as I did after all these years.

  8. Saw the current lineup of The Little River Band tonight and, despite there no longer being any of the original members the bass player, Wayne Nelson, who in a previous life played with artists such as Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, has been with LRB since late 1980. They played a couple tunes from their latest album released in late 2024 and they were pretty good. It was a good show that they closed with this tune.

  9. Every time the FOTUS or one of the members of his fucking goon squad opens their filthy sewer and spews bullshit, this tune comes to mind for me. Besides, the opening keyboards are flipping asskicking.

  10. Well, I guess I’m gonna see the Little River Band Friday night. It’s a casino show so we’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, probably my favorite tune from these guys out here on deck.

  11. It’s finally Friday on deck. I had the “Don’t wanna go back to work blues” type of thing Monday morning after a week off but got back into the swing of things. There were a couple dates of note personally this week, one being Tuesday, 12 August, marking my 14th year at the newspaper. Then, there’s today, 14 August, this year marking 20 years since my oldest son Ryan, KIA in Iraq, was buried. And here’s CCR to help make things cool.

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
    Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress
Running like a watercolor in the rain
    Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the Year Of The Cat

  16. Supposedly, more smokey shit is on the way from Canadian wildfires; they’re saying may be in the area by tomorrow this time. So, I shall enjoy a clear evening ondeck after a fairly long day. Plenty of writing to do but fuck it. I’m just enjoy this. Work stuff can wait.

    Freedom, keep walkin'
Keep on your toes and don't stop talkin' 'bout
    Freedom, get goin'
Lots to be learned, and lots to be known about people
    Gotta reach 'em
Sit 'em right down and then you gotta teach 'em about freeman
Gotta win it, gotta put yourself smack-dab in it

  20. Wasn’t their debut, obviously - these guys had been around for awhile by the time this was released in ‘78 - but it’s my favorite from them. The guitar solo kicks ass.

  22. My oldest grandson Ryan’s intent to learn how to play electric bass has intrigued me and today I sent his dad a link to a song that has a simple bass line an 11 1/2 year-old should be able to pick up relatively easily especially for a kid as bright as he is. I told his dad from the time I first heard it when I was younger than my grandson Ryan (I was eight) I always liked the way the bass kicks in.
