  1. “We were brilliant in the sun.” Book 30

A short post today to share a recent arrival in the form of another poetry pamphlet from the poet laureate, Simon Armitage. I've amassed quite a collection of his books and pamphlets, several of them signed, so when I saw that Faber were reissuing a limited edition of his first ever publication, "Human Geography", I just couldn't resist.

  3. “…culture belongs…in its original context.” Book 29

As I do keep saying, books lead to other books... I was unsure what to pick up after the Borges/di Giovanni and did spend a little time reading up on the state of Borges' literary estate. And this reminded me that I had a book lurking on the TBR which explored another issue of contested literary heritage - "Kafka's Last Trial" by Benjamin Balint…

  5. “Translation is an art.” Book 28

It was inevitable that after finishing "Trafalgar", with its echoes of Borges (amongst others), that I would be drawn towards a book by or about him; and I realised I had the perfect title on the TBR which chimed in with my current reading mood completely. That book is "The Lesson of the Master: On Borges and his Work" by Norman Thomas di Giovanni…

  7. “You could…write a story with each one of my trips” Book 27

...aaaand inevitably, my plans go out of the window... As I mentioned at the end of July, I had made a modest pile of books for August's Women in Translation Month, and for two titles I've stuck to my plans. However, I saw mention online (I think via a Penguin newsletter) of new editions of fictions by Angelica Gorodischer, and I recalled that I had an earlier copy which came as a…

  9. #booksky 💙📚 #bookstodon All the Stage is Her World! My #bookreview for "Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent" by Judi Dench, on my #bookblog now. No wonder they're renaming The Shaftesbury theatre in her honor next year (and I'm glad it isn't in her memory)! #BeatTheBacklist #OOCZ2026 #20bos26

  10. “…waiting for an inevitable disaster…” Book 26

I seem to have spent a lot of time recently involved in books which deal with the horrors of the 20th century; maybe it's a reaction to what's happening in our current world where it seems that the human race hasn't moved on at all since then. Today's book is a title I've had on the TBR in one form or another for a good number of years and have got close to reading several times - …

  14. “…we…avoid any demonstration of feelings…” Book 25

For once, my reading plans are actually proceeding as expected. My first read for Women in Translation Month is a book which was on my pile of possibles and is a relatively recent arrival - "The Crib" by Albertine Sarrazin, translated by Sonya Moor. I first read Sarrazin back in 2019 for the ; the book was her most famous, "

  16. “…fate is a huge joke…” Book 24

Despite my best efforts to focus on the books which are languishing on the TBR, there are occasions when my eye is caught by a fascinating new title and I have to source a copy to read straight away. That happened recently when Grant shared his thoughts on "The Name on the Wall" by Herve Le Tellier (translated by Adriana Hunter…
