My latest review is up and this time, I’m in Cambridge at Leymoon, for tasty fast-casual Mediterranean dishes that meld Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian flavours. in ways your usual shawarma spot doesn't.

Loving this talk about trust and how double entry accounting gave us the tools to trust capitalism and what we might learn about building trust in the modern era from @leymoo #monkigras

In one of those interesting moments, I spent so long comprising today a slack message to a colleague explaining something that I deleted it all and put it into a blog post.
This time it’s all about those teams that appear over time, moving data between systems in some way.
https://ashley.rolfmore.com/ode-to-the-organisational-gaffer-tape/
Not covered in this post but implied - why giving this to an LLM will not work (basically the same reason why APIs didn’t remove them a decade ago).

London Euston to Milton Keynes. Before 9am. Go to machine, two fares listed, neither with route restrictions on the screen. The machine used normally states the restrictions in the button that has the fare in. One is £1 or so cheaper, no route restrictions listed in either, so I pick that. As they’re giant QR code things, I put them straight into the rucksack and not my pocket, where they can slip out.
Get on train. Announcement “if you have an Avanti route only fare; you will have to buy a new ticket”. Check the printed ticket. Says Avanti only?! Why was that not on the display?! Timing means I do just rush across 7-8 platforms. Losing me most of the time gain I had for buying an Anytime fare for almost double the price.
Check on fares. I’m actually eligible to request an excess, which is a ticket that lets you pay the difference. Obviously this person doesn’t announce that an “upgrade” is possible, the phrasing used is “brand new ticket” and no way am I arguing with someone that is announcing that up front on this much sleep! 😅
And why has the pricing display on those ticket machines changed, but in a way that looks the same but without the extra info 🫠 - I intentionally went to an older machine that I was familiar with to save effort.
For context, train is my primary mode of travel in the uk and has been for my adult life, including a job with 30% travel. I currently *work* in the rail sector, and I’ve recreationally presented on train fare rules. And broadly I’m better than most on handling it, but also, this environment is actively hostile even for those who *do* know some of the innards. Can’t imagine what it’s like for those who use it less often - it must be horrid.

“oh, you’re [some ND label]. Are there any accommodations we need to worry about?”
“if you already treat your staff well, you likely won’t even notice”Most of the accommodations I need are provided for in decent office workplaces: the facility to type and not be forced to handwrite notes, flexible or semi flexible hours, the ability to use the bathroom when I need it, not giving me the nth degree if I take an (unpaid) sick day, being a bit less arsey if I have poor short term memory or have done something practical to work round that...
This is certainly not true for everything and everyone in situations like me, in fact we need to be better with accommodations for all not just for those of us who can get round some stuff with middle class perks. I will say there are a good chunk of us who can bob above water in a good workplace right now that would drown in a bad one.
And disability accommodations, at work or elsewhere, isn't a middle class perk that one should earn through the "right" skin colour, accent and education - it's a human right.

I have been trying to do things in the evening with my hands that aren't doomscrolling and/or being on late work calls. Behold, paint markers and pebbles! This is something I find difficult because I have v poor fine motor control and consistency with my physical control but it has been really rewarding to concentrate on in a low stakes way. Plus, the colours come out so deep and satisfying.

So emboldened by you all taking an interest in Capital Radio accidentally creating a chatroom in the 1970s and early 80s, causing my parents to meet, I asked my dad about it. He is squeamish talking about my mother but I focused on the switchboard equipment instead in the hope he'd open up.
He's "going to check" but I did get this good story out of him from the present day:
He supports phone systems as a day job. He recently got a support call from a nuclear power plant. They had noticed something odd on one of the transcriptions from their meeting calls: halfway through, the transcription notes had switched from normal business stuff to instead planning a murder and burying the body.
Are the phone systems ok? Did they leak a call? Was there a crime?
after some panic - they'd worked out that the host had just forgotten to hang up and was watching a crime drama after their call, and the AI transcription tool was merrily taking notes in the background...

CW: Self promotion
Trust is the glue of our society, but we’re living through a 30+ year crisis of trust in institutions. As software makers, we aren't just witnesses to this crisis; we are participants in it.
When a number is wrong, trust is lost. And I am sort of fed up of "works on my machine" being applied to number and data outputs by systems. "Number is correct, bug closed". We have to do better.
So I've tried to document that, and also share some more difficult areas like communicating uncertainty in a sensible way.
The lovely people at #Monkigras are letting me share this with a wonderful audience of curious engineers next week (19th-20th March - link https://monkigras.com/ )
Do not worry, there will also be trains. Hopefully yellow ones.

I share this object to my socials again, in the image below.
I ask the fediverse, what object are you aware of that can signify social class and yet has never been mentioned in mainstream news article? (joke answers also welcomed)

#Monkigras And yes I did forget to explain who I am or what I do! I think that’s ok, every time I think I’ve found a job title that might describe what I do I get a new job and someone asks me yet again to write my own job description after 6 months…

#Monkigras Day 1 done, lovely people, food, as always.
I really want to try to share the messages I had in my talk in a packaged format, so I’ll sort that out.

I’m mainly sharing this interview tip because it really helped @cloudthethings recently:
If you get a tech question where the answer is “well I wouldn’t do x” or a simple answer when they’re expecting a deep answer, remember:
- interviews are meta
- this is not realSo here’s the trick.
“If this was real work, I’d say not do this because [reason] however I understand you’re asking me to explore this as a interview topic so in the spirit of that we can explore…. “It’s magic. You get the real opinion done and heard, so you don’t lose credibility but you’re still allowing them to use their notes and see how you approach problem solving. Plus you can seem more senior by considering build vs buy as an option upfront, assuming the “don’t do” is “get foo to do they have a tool”.
Enjoy! #interview #techtest #interviewscenario #whiteboarding

!! can someone come up with a better term for those orgs who will be assimilated into GBR? I had to come up with “future GBR entities” for a miro board today and it just seems a bit awkward.

One clarification gathered this weekend- Capital Radio was broadly 24h so this would have been available on the shows without phone call-in. I originally assumed it was happening while it was off air.
I’m honestly dreading asking my dad, despite him (still) being a telecoms engineer. My mother has clarified that this was before he had any knowledge in the area - once he did he was merrily installing what the American phreakers would call black boxes (which he called ERIC) into phones for friends, family, and plod from the local pub…

My mother would like to clarify for the record that a friend got her onto the phone line, she was “too cool” for the fully licensed and legal capital radio and listened to mainly pirate radio, notably Horizon Radio #radio #capitalradio #phreaking #VintagePhoning #1980s #retrochatroom

You might be amused to know that my mother is now deeply bored of the phone kit and phone system details I am showing her (please don’t stop sharing it, I’m loving it) but I suspect my dad would be bored instead about the radio and human interest aspect of this (and would also be deeply squeamish to talk in detail about meeting my mother, someone he broke up with over 30 years ago) so it balances out l reckon #radio #capitalradio #phreaking #VintagePhoning #1980s #retrochatroom

Oh my goodness. I think this is the only place on the internet nerdy enough to help me locate this info.
My parents met on a what was effectively an unofficial chat room hosted by capital radio (London). In the 1980s, Capital Radio used to leave their switchboard open at night (unintentionally, they didn’t realise it was happening) and people would call the regular radio phone and just end up in what was effectively a giant group call for Londoners late at night. (I say Londoners due to the reach of the radio rather than the phone line itself, people wouldn’t know the number unless they listened in).
I understand they changed how the phone system worked later in the 80s and closed this loophole off.
So what I’m after is…
- the nature of the switchboard that allowed this to happen - edit now answered
- what change would have blocked this later on - edit now answered
- any historic info on the period it was left open, or personal accounts - still pending, trying other social media too for this#radio #capitalradio #phreaking #VintagePhoning #1980s #retrochatroom

So, we have termites. Longer story for another day.
The part for today - the droppings fall out of gaps in our roof beams. And in a wonderfully gross example of wave particle duality, the droppings fall into a doughnut 🍩 shape, mimicking the single slit experiment, but with tiny bits of our roof.

My suggested Saturday read that just derailed me: https://djhistory.com/read/norman-jay-has-his-groove-rare/
An absolutely delightful interview of Norman Jay from 1999 by Bill Brewster, covering The Music but also so much culture around it - Mods, Rude boys, Soulboys, punks, Northern Soul vs Soulboys, Pirate radio and Kiss, what being black meant in all this, his times visiting Brooklyn, and his brother soldering giant sound systems together and taking them to clubs in Tesco trolleys to install them.
