  1. “I am proud to say that as part of our new union contract, Current Affairs recently adopted one of the strictest anti-AI policies in the publishing industry. No text that is AI-generated may be published in our magazine. No AI-generated art may be used as a Current Affairs illustration. When you read Current Affairs, you are going to be reading the thoughts of a human, and seeing the results of human artistry.”

    “Why We’re Banning AI”

  2. Recently met a tech industry friend whose team got hit by significant layoffs in the past few months. The team hired on some (lower cost?) fresh faces who were tasked to work on their code with Claude #AI. One of the new folks prompted Claude to implement some new feature, and Claude extruded a response which recommended first getting advice from one of the engineers who was laid off.

  3. In other interesting news, #Instagram has been very aggressively marking *tons* of images as “AI”. Even posts that I know aren’t #AI-generated are sometimes marked “AI content”. Some accounts are marked as “AI-generated profile” accounts—I’m not sure what the criteria are, but I think it’s a label that Instagram *makes* you add to your account if you have too many images of (what it thinks are) AI-generated faces in your posts. If you don’t add the label, they will deemphasize your account in your followers’ feeds.

The AI labels are irritating some folks I know who post hand-made or clipart-based flyer art. And there is no way to get rid of the label. Funny enough, I can post the *exact* same image and it does *not* get labelled as AI, so it’s not just some image-scoring model; there’s got to be some other heuristic at play.

  4. I noticed something interesting on #Instagram: there is no longer a “Create with AI” option when you press the New Post (+) button. The button has reverted to its pre-AI behavior of…wait for it…creating a new post.

Either I got A/B tested into this UX, or they’ve given up on the feature, which would be pretty good news.

(I think it’s not just an A/B test, because my other accounts have also been switched to this flow).

PS: No, it doesn’t mean Meta has given up on AI. There is now a big old Muse button on the titlebar. But it does suggest that the mandatory “create with AI” flow was a bust, and people found it annoying.
