  6. I feel lucky to live in a southeast Asian neighborhood where there are plenty of excellent Thai and Vietnamese restaurants but lately with the higher cost of eating out

If I am meeting friends and I can cook something comparable (3-4 courses of a full southeast asian meal) at less than $10 per person (vs $25-40 per person eating out), I’m doing that.

I’m very confident in cooking most variations of Thai. Vietnamese less so but working on it.

  9. My mom told me she’s decided she will not spend a single day in any of her remaining years going to anywhere even slightly cold. She does not want to be cold; even for an hour.

Good on her, obviously. This includes San Francisco I think.

She seems to really have severe bodily reactions to temperatures below 27C / 80F.

  10. In the video Mike talks about how if you’re someone who is used to much spicier food, Frank’s and other vinegar-first hot sauces just taste like only vinegar. You don’t taste balance. Just vinegar.

It’s true. I don’t taste any spice in any of that stuff, it’s just white vinegar to me.

Anyway I’m excited to see his take on how to make modifications so that I’ll actually like this dish (I love wings. I just think most buffalo wings are sour wings, for the same reason he describes)

  11. Chinese Cooking Demystified has a video on why it seems like most Chinese people dislike buffalo wings. The theory is that Chinese people hate Frank’s hot sauce

    I can vouch for that

  12. I don’t care what political side you’re on, anyone who is weird about any immigrants including H-1B workers is not a good ally. You don’t get to only support the immigrants you like who might not ‘take your well paid job’.

  13. My wife and I are planning to spend the rest of the year in southeast and South Asia. Or the places we formerly called home (multiple).

For the last 8 years since we became immigrants, we’ve led a very domestic life in which it was difficult or impossible to really stay in close or constant contact with our homes.

Personally, I have a very deep love and relationship for Singapore / Malaysia / Indonesia / India, or the places where I have spent most of my life. Being away from them for so long really started to impact my mental health.

We’re not moving back, for reasons, but I’m glad to be at the point in our lives where it’s now possible to look at spending a few months a year back ‘home’. I can’t wait.

  14. I can reasonably speak almost any tonal Asian language, including in syllables and tones that I don’t have natively, but I cannot make the ‘pfft’ sound that French speakers seem to make

  17. I can’t believe that in the year of our lord 2026 someone is like ‘look at my grand uncle’s medal for imperial Japan he was a kamikaze pilot during the war’

They really need to do something about their history education

  19. I’m on a subreddit about procurement

Someone was complaining about AI slop

They said ‘should we put out an RFP for mods’

    I laughed so hard

  20. I saw a news story about someone being described as a ‘detention industry veteran’. That’s a really nice way of saying ‘corporate slaver in the American incarceration complex’

  21. I’ve been here 8 years and every time someone says ‘after memorial day’ I have no idea when it is and I keep forgetting after I keep looking it up.

It’s just one of those things like pretending to know what a quart of something is.

  22. Looking forward to spending much more time in southeast and South Asia later this year.

It will be so nice to be home again.
