This is the best side-view I was able to get of former #GNRi 4-4-0 steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion working the 2025 #RPSI Santa Specials. This shows the engine’s defining features nicely:
1. Two sets of small leading wheels, two sets of big driving wheels, and no trialing wheels, hence 4-4-0!
2. An un-tapered boiler (cylindrical)
3. A separate coal and water tender (so not a tank engine despite the Thomas-blue colour) -

The challenges in Programming By Stealth were a bit more ... challenging for me so the first half is a deep dive into how to solve them and then we get into new material. This is PBS 158A because I asked so many questions, but @bbusschots’s shownotes cover PBS 158B as well.

This perfectly straight contrail cutting through the wispy thin clouds caught my eye on my work to work this morning.

The designs of many of our Irish cycle lanes has led me to suspect that many are designed by people only vaguely familiar with the concept of a bicycle, these markings in #Lucan sure do suggest I’m right!

A glimpse of times past — now heavily altered to become the dream home for a railway fan, hints of the distinctive MGWR (Midland Great Western Railway) architectural style survive in the former Lucan North station on the hill high above #Lucan village on the banks of a rural stretch of the #RoyalCanal.

An #IrishRail Intercity #train entering the tight turn on the approach to #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station as the railway and canal turn 90° to enter the Ryewater viaduct directly after the station. The newly redeveloped towpath is unusually free of joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists here!
