POKÉMANIAC SIPH wants to fight!

  1. Around the same time, I started a hunt for a shiny starter in SoulSilver, but I only did around a hundred resets before deciding to fully focus on Unown. The day after I found it, I started again, and in a single session, I reached 211 resets, so 633 encounters, since HGSS lets you see if a starter is shiny before you pick it, so each resets counts as 3 encounters if you aren’t going for a specific species. I was much luckier this time, as this is the classic 1/8192 odds : the binomial distribution for this hunt is 7,44%.

I named this new friend Barlow!

  2. On February 1st, I learned that the way #Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen forces Unowns to be certain letters in each Tanoby chamber has an effect on the shiny odds. More details here: buriedrelic.neocities.org/page

It turned out that with my ID and secret ID (I was able to calculate the latter using my shiny starter’s stats), it turned out that Unown A had the lowest odds possible, 1/5120, instead of the regular 1/8192. Since it has 99% of showing up in its chamber (with the last 1% being Unown Question Mark, with 1/9216 shiny odds), I thought it would be a pretty quick hunt! Especially since I brought a Pokémon with the ability Illuminate and a White Flute I had traded in from Emerald to increase the encounter frequency.

Well… It took me over 13484 Unown A encounters and 133 Unown ? encounters for it to show up. After eight-months of hunting it on or off. Whoops!

If my math is right, the binomial distribution of this hunt is 92,92%, which is not out-of-this-world unlucky, but still!
