@j_g_fitzgerald Whilst living in Austin, Texas in 1994 I got hone, turned on the TV and there was a was a news crew reporting from the scene of a drive-by shooting at a red traffic light at an off ramp from I-35. A light that I'd stopped at on my way home maybe 15 minutes earlier. I can still feel the sense of relief of the pure chance but I was not the random victim. It seems to many Americans that #GunContol equates to holding it steady whilst taking aim. Nothing has changed since.

"World leaders are losing their terror of nuclear war
Putin, Trump and Xi control the most powerful arsenals on Earth. They should take nuclear risks more seriously
Fear can paralyse, but sometimes it saves the world. More than once in the cold war a shared dread of nuclear annihilation led American and Soviet leaders to pause and seek better ways to manage arsenals whose power defied decency and reason. Sometimes the terror felt by superpower rivals averted imminent disaster, as when John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev overruled their hardline counsellors to end the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. On other occasions the salutary effects of fear took longer to show themselves. A film, 'The Brink of War', has just been released to mark the 40th anniversary of a meeting between Ronald Reagan and his Soviet counterpart, Mikhail Gorbachev, in Reykjavik. Held in a cramped, reputedly haunted seaside house, the summit was intense and claustrophobic. Diplomats who took part recalled the two officers, one American and one Russian, who stood outside the leaders’ meeting room holding the 'footballs' that controlled 60,000 nuclear warheads between them.

he meeting, in October 1986, was seen as a failure at the time. Later, though, Reagan’s secretary of state, George Shultz, credited it with laying the groundwork for subsequent treaties that scrapped whole categories of nuclear weapons. Gorbachev called Reykjavik the place where the cold war’s ending was set in motion. A big breakthrough involved a mutual admission by the American and Soviet leaders that they feared and despised nuclear weapons and—shocking their more hawkish advisers—that they aspired to eliminate them all, perhaps as soon as within ten years.Talks were derailed by a dispute about Mutually Assured Destruction (mad), the doctrine that, to avoid war, nuclear attacks must end in doom for all sides. Reagan, hating the idea of seeking peace through vulnerability, refused to halt his Strategic Defence Initiative (sdi), his (never-realised) dream of an interceptor shield against nuclear missiles. I will not have future generations of Americans live in fear,' the film’s Reagan declares, echoing declassified transcripts. Gorbachev asks how he can begin to disarm, if a shield might let America renege and strike the ussr with impunity. He dismisses Reagan’s offer to share sdi as a 'fantasy'.
Today the world has a new problem: its strongest countries are insufficiently horrified by their own nuclear firepower. America, China and Russia are all bent on enlarging or modernising their nuclear arsenals. As a result, they are either reluctant to join arms-control talks or have allowed previously agreed pacts to lapse."

Was just reminded of #AnneBancroft and had no idea what particular movies I knew her from, just that the name screamed "famous! accomplished!" to me.
Looked her up and ... only two stand out: The Graduate (which I've never actually gotten around to seeing) and Point of No Return (a US remake of Nikita with Bridget Fonda, known in Germany as "Codename: Nina").
Also, her young face was unfamiliar to me, so I definitely only remember her later work.

Wie westliche Linke und Anarchisten „passende” Stimmen aus Osteuropa fanden
Debatten über #Antimilitarismus bringen die anarchistische Bewegung im Westen immer wieder durcheinander. Oft sieht man in diesen #Debatten, dass einige Organisationen aus der #Ukraine oder #Russland die Position „Kein Krieg, sondern #Klassenkampf” unterstützen. Dreieinhalb Jahre nach dem Beginn der groß angelegten Invasion der Ukraine ist die anarchistische Bewegung extrem gespalten. Frühere Strategien, „auf lokale Stimmen zu hören”, sind bei denen, die von vornherein kein Interesse daran hatten, größtenteils gescheitert. Da in Zukunft sicherlich weitere Skandale folgen werden, ist es wichtig zu verstehen, wie es zu dieser Situation gekommen ist.
Vor mehr als zehn Jahren annektierte Russland die #Krim und besetzte einen Teil der #Ostukraine. Schon damals nannte der #Kreml verschiedene Gründe für die Besetzung, je nachdem, welche politischen Ansichten die Zielgruppe hatte. Für die linke/antifaschistische Bewegung haben russische #Propagandisten die Geschichte verbreitet, dass ein faschistisches #Regime in #Kiew illegal die Macht übernommen hat. Die #Invasion von 2014 wurde als antifaschistische Aktion dargestellt. Die meisten #Anarchisten und #Antifaschisten in der Region waren nach vielen Jahren der Propaganda immun gegen solche Lügen geworden. Für einige westliche Antifaschisten und #Linke war die Präsenz faschistischer Flaggen während der Maidan-Proteste jedoch so schockierend, dass sie die Geschichte eines rechtsextremen #Staatsstreichs ohne weitere Fakten glaubten.
Viele Anarchisten in der Ukraine waren damals der Meinung, dass es zur Bekämpfung des russischen Imperiums ausreichte, sich mit der Situation vertraut zu machen, um zu verstehen, was im Land vor sich ging, und Fakten über die Geschehnisse zu liefern. In #Belarus hatten wir eine ähnliche Vorstellung davon, wie wir mit #Genossen im Westen im Kampf gegen die russische #Propaganda zusammenarbeiten sollten. Diese lautete: Die Wahrheit spricht für sich selbst, und diejenigen, die auf #Putins Position bestehen, sind einfach Menschen, die aus irgendeinem Grund nicht von den Fakten erreicht wurden. Aber selbst dann trafen wir auf Menschen, die besser wussten, was in ihrem eigenen Haus vor sich ging.
Ich erinnere mich noch gut daran, wie bei einer Präsentation ein antiautoritärer Aktivist aus der Ukraine über den #Maidan und die Situation nach den Protesten sprach und ein deutscher Experte darauf antwortete, dass Kiew einfach von #Faschisten besetzt worden sei. Versuche, ihm das Gegenteil zu beweisen, waren in diesem Moment zwecklos. Die russische Propaganda hatte schon ihre Wirkung gezeigt. Damals, als ich bei einer Präsentation über die Ukraine saß, kam mir gar nicht in den Sinn, dass wir mit unserem Glauben an kritisches Denken im anarchistischen und linken Milieu unglaublich naiv waren...
Nach der vollständigen #Invasion gehörte ich zu denen, die darauf bestanden, dass wir die Stimmen der Anarchisten aus der Ukraine hören müssen, um den Krieg zu verstehen und zu wissen, was wir in dieser Situation entsprechend unseren Möglichkeiten tun können. Meiner Meinung nach führten solche Aufrufe dazu, dass dauerhafte Kontakte zwischen westlichen Gruppen und Aktivisten aus der Ukraine / #Weißrussland / Russland entstanden. Und eine Zeit lang war das auch so, denn die Leute interessierten sich dafür, recherchierten und hörten zu. Aber das hielt nicht lange an. Bald darauf tauchten selbsternannte Kämpfer des #Militarismus innerhalb der anarchistischen Bewegung auf. Für sie waren die Botschaften der ukrainischen und russischen Anarchisten inakzeptabel. Anstatt sich solidarisch zu organisieren, beschlossen einige westliche Linke und Anarchisten, nach Gruppen in Belarus, der Ukraine und Russland zu suchen, die ihren dogmatischen Ansichten über den Krieg und die Rolle der westlichen Länder darin voll und ganz entsprachen.
In Russland wurden solche Verbündeten relativ schnell gefunden. Für Antimilitaristen ließen sich die Positionen der russischen Organisation KRAS-MAT leicht in die westliche, veraltete #Analyse von #Kriegen integrieren. Sie machten den Angriff des Kremls auf die Ukraine zu einem Konflikt zwischen den herrschenden #Eliten beider Länder. Texte, in denen die ukrainische Gesellschaft aufgefordert wurde, die Waffen niederzulegen und gegen die eigene Regierung zu kämpfen, verbreiteten sich auf verschiedenen anarchistischen und linken Websites. Die Linken und Anarchisten interessierten sich nicht besonders für die Kritik anderer Gruppen in den betroffenen Regionen an #KRASMAT. Die ideologische Nähe der westlichen Linken zu KRAS-MAT war wichtiger als alle politischen Probleme mit dem Syndikat der #Akademiker, das längst aufgehört hatte, sich an der Arbeiterbewegung in Russland zu beteiligen.
