    i'm starting to look at photos for the soviet ag part of my industrial ag mega-zine. this is a very tricky subject.

    i want to show how things were, but i don't want to do the typical "soviet suffering" (bread lines, etc.). i also don't want to do "rosy soviet nostalgia" (propaganda type photos).

    however, i was only 4 when we left, so i don't actually really know what it was like.

    i'll definitely include some photos from farms, but it would also be nice to include some grocery store photos, and maybe like...a typical meal at home.

    i emailed it to my parents and asked them "if you had to pick one or two of these photos to show americans what it was REALLY like, which one would you pick?" we'll see if they pick one.

    part of the issue is that i don't have a sense for which photos show a typical experience, which ones show an experience in like a "very nice" grocery store, or which ones show an experience in a crisis moment or in a very poor village or something. conditions in moscow were very different than conditions everywhere else. conditions varied at different points in history. it's very tricky!
