(from Dragons) Chal'tanis' largest irrational fear is being seen as 'useless' or abandoned due to being 'unhelpful'. It's irrational because she's a font of knowledge and magically capable - but she can't just quell those fears.
It stems from her family abandoning her to the monastery; the monks finding her 'unfit' for religious training, and "allowing" her to be put through archivist training (near torture).
