Just some clarity on what the #Eagles can or can't say when it comes to their players' medical issues and whether Howie Roseman should have been made available to answer questions rather than Nick Sirianni:
For years during the Andy Reid era, many times when there was an injury or medical situation that extended beyond the norm, the team would provide head trainer Rick Burkholder to answer questions from reporters.
For instance, when Mike Patterson collapsed and suffered a seizure during training camp in 2011, Burkholder was front and center after Patterson was diagnosed with cerebral arteriovenous malformation.
When Reid left, the Eagles essentially decided they would keep most injury information private outside of NFL-sanctioned practice and status reports.
Most of the questions about Jalen Hurts and his blood clot(s) that were directed at Nick Sirianni on Monday, however, were about procedure (should he have played? traveled? flown?). Sirianni deferred to the team's medical staff.
Obviously, no one from the medical staff was made available. They don't report to Sirianni, but to Eagles GM Howie Roseman. Roseman doesn't typically speak with reporters on the record during the season, except after major trades (i.e. Cam Jurgens two weeks ago). But there is nothing preventing the team from having a news conference with Roseman over the handling of Hurts during the last few weeks.
Presumably, if Roseman -- who is responsible for all roster decisions and oversees all medical, training, strength and sports science departments -- and the team believe they handled Hurts appropriately, then they shouldn't be wary of answering specific questions about the topic for public consumption.
