A few scenes from yesterday evening and last night around town.
Quite a lot of trees are down and lots of infrastructure and buildings are damaged, so it’s going to take a while before things get back to normal.
Still, the town is incredibly busy at the moment due to the festival tonight, when the boat will be taken down to the beach and set alight.

The typhoon is gone now and clean up efforts are well underway. They actually started immediately last night when the wind was low enough, with everyone venturing out and starting to do what they could.
We got power back last night as well, although some areas of town are still in darkness tonight. Internet is flaky and 台灣大哥大 cell towers are mostly offline, but some other providers survived and are now swamped with usage due to #東港迎王, which has been powering ahead today!

Well it turns out to be essentially a direct hit…
Power is out and we’re currently bracing the front roller door to stop it popping in like the store’s next door.
Lots of big signs down and building damage. Our relatives in Kaohsiung have lost the roof of their house 😶
It’s going to be a huge clean up effort and #東港迎王 has really been messed up too!

The wind is really feeling like a typhoon now! So much noise! Especially from signs flapping around.
A huge one that wrapped the corner of a nearby building has become a massive flag that’s whipping about.
As usual, the local sign companies will be happy 🙃
Unfortunately the building where my friends and family are staying has a leak on the top floor. They’re really getting the local experience 😅
At least it’s currently looking less likely it’ll be a direct hit for us.

Typhoon Haikui continues to track west to Taiwan and looks set to be the first typhoon in more than four years to make landfall. It could still slip south, but it's looking pretty steady.
The entire east coast is going to receive a huge amount of rain over the next 24 hours.
It could be pretty hectic where we are (we also happened to get the last typhoon that made landfall back in 2019), but the mountains usually help a bit 🤞

Typhoon Haikui's forecast path has been progressively shifting south with each model update and now has a most probable track that would take it directly over Taiwan.

Time for the next one!
Typhoon Saola looks like it'll bring a lot of rain to Taiwan over the next week, although there's still a lot of uncertainty about its path.
If it takes the most probable path, I'm going to be in for a wild time here in the south 😬
If it's on the north side of the most probable path and it therefore makes landfall, it'll finally end a streak of 95 typhoons over 4 years that have missed Taiwan!
