這裡所謂 #胡適 思想言行中的複雜與矛盾，具體說是這樣：

胡適是「五四」激烈反傳統主義運動的領軍人物，在他內心深處，仍然認同中國傳統文化的某些價值，在他的某些文章尤其是英文著作中，也留下一些稱許中國文化的言論。

不過一個有趣的現象是，基於「內外有別」的原則，胡適把自己對中國文化的某些價值的承認或讚許，大都限制在英語世界之內，免得對中文讀者和自己倡導的反傳統主義運動帶來不良影響。
