  1. With a group of Russians they made an escape vessel of driftwood and otter skins, and reached the mainland.
    Kōdayū proved an exceptional leader.

After many adventures (and years), Kōdayū arrived in St. Petersburg to ask permission to return home to Japan. Received by the Russian nobility, it is at this time he is said to have enjoyed (black) tea with Catherine the Great.

9 years later, in 1791, he made it back home!

  2. Born in Ise Prefecture, Daikokuya Kōdayū was captain of the merchant ship Shinshō-maru (神昌丸).
Close to Shizuoka (en route to Edo) the ship was crippled by a storm, and for 7 months they drifted helplessly until reaching the island of Amchitka.

    They had astonishingly bad luck.
Shortly after arriving the Aleuts Uprising occurred (1784) and the Russian ship sent to rescue them sank!

  3. ☕ TEA DAY😋

Happy 'Tea Day' (紅茶の日 'Kōcha-no-hi')...specifically black tea☕️🎉

It celebrates Daikokuya Kōdayū (大黒屋光太夫 1751- 1828) enjoying black tea for the first time with Russian high society (and possibly Catherine the Great) in 1791.
