  1. Thousands of painted bulbs are gathered into intricate designs, illuminating the Old Foreign Settlement (旧居留地 'Kyūkyoryūchi') and Higashi Yūenchi Park (東遊園地公園), home of the 'Great Hanshin Earthquake Memorial Flame' (1.17希望の灯り).

Valerio Festi and Imaoka Hirokazu (今岡寛和) collaborated to produce the first winter spectacle, working with bulbs donated by the Italian government.

  2. Before the pandemic the Luminarie was held in December, in the run-up to Christmas, but from this year the event will move back to January 19th to 28th. It will follow memorial events held for victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake on January 17th.

The Luminarie will also be spread across the city for the first time, to lessen congestion and in an effort to make the event more sustainable.
