  1. 'Myōren-ji Tsubaki' (妙蓮寺椿) is a species of scarlet camellia, particularly popular in the Muromachi period. Tea masters favoured the flower, and Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) adored the camellias so much he praised them in poems.

Although predominantly considered a winter plant, camellias can be seen blooming for a large part of the year (from late fall to mid-spring)🙌

  3. Camellia flowers inspire a mind-boggling number of traditional sweets.

The most famous, and one of the oldest (an early version featuring in 'The Tale of Genji'), is 'tsubaki-mochi' (椿餅). Camellia leaves adorn a sticky rice cake, but unlike sakura-mochi the leaves act as decoration only.

  5. 🌿ROYAL ESCAPE🙏

Cherry blossoms aren't the only flowers in town🤔

For two brief periods each year the once-imperial nunnery of Reikan-ji (霊鑑寺) opens its gate to the public.
Until April 7th visitors can enjoy over 100 species of camellia dotted around the hillside gardens.

  6. The foliage outside is still beautifully autumnal but I've noticed the camellias are coming out, and they really put me in a winter mood 🥰

  7. The meaning of this special camellia's name...
    ✨goshiki (五色)= 'multicoloured'
    ✨yae (八重)= 'multilayered'
    ✨chiri (散)= 'shedding petals'
    ✨tsubaki (椿)= 'camellia'

Samurai mostly considered camellia unlucky as the flower heads typically dropped whole (like a beheading), but this species drop their petals one at a time🙌

  8. 🍶😵‍💫THE TEMPLE OF ABSTINENCE🙏✨

Jizō-in (地蔵院) hasn't survived the ravages of time well, but it has some extraordinary tales to tell. Many know the tiny temple as 'Tsubaki-dera' (椿寺) after a camellia shrub that was smuggled from a Korean castle and later gifted by a warlord.
