As old as Kyōto, Tō-ji ('East Temple') sits in the same place it has occupied for 1200 years, though its grounds have been vastly reduced.
Originally called Kyō-ō-Gokoku-ji (教王護国寺), the temple acted as guardian of the new capital (Heian-kyō 平安京).

💸🍡FIRST MARKETS👘🙏
The most important markets of the year fall just before and just after the New Year.
Hatsu Kōbō (初弘法 'the 1st Kōbō market of the year'), held on the 21st of January at Tō-ji, is one of the city's largest. -
No-one is quite sure how Tō-ji's "Gourd Pond" (瓢箪池) came to be, but some suggest water gathered in a hole that was dug some time in the Edo period.
The pagoda had begun to lean to the south after ferocious winds, and a hole dug on its north side had fixed the problem.

Tō-ji's 5-storied pagoda is 54.8m high, making it the tallest wooden tower in Japan.
In 826 Kūkai felled 24 trees on sacred Mt. Inari to construct the temple's first pagoda. Soon after work began Emperor Junna fell deathly sick and people feared the Inari gods had been angered.
Kūkai constructed a shrine to appease the gods of Inari. The two religious sites have maintained a strong relationship for over a thousand years.
