  1. Until the end of WWII Nara's deer were considered sacred, messengers of the 'sword god' Takemikazuchi (武甕槌大神).

    Hailing from Kashima in Ibaraki (鹿嶋), it is said the god appeared on Mt. Mikasa (三笠山) riding a white deer, and was later enshrined at Kasuga-taisha (春日大社).
