Early Buddhists discovered they could not grow sal trees in Japan's climate, and so scrambled for a solution...They bestowed on the abundant 'natsu-tsubaki' (夏椿 the 'Japanese stewartia') the honorary title 'sal tree' (沙羅)🤫
