  6. In order to ward off evil and welcome in good fortune for the new year, since Edo times it has been a tradition to take a yuzu-yu on the Winter Solstice...possibly because the words for 'winter solstice' (冬至) and 'hot-spring cure' (湯治) can both be read as 'tōji'.

  13. Homemade jiaozi 餃子 and tangyuan 湯圓 (glutinous rice balls, in our house, usually filled with sesame or peanut paste, in fermented rice and osmanthus wine soup; or savory fillings with meats/vegetables) from previous winter solstices.

Northerners eat dumplings 🥟and Southerners, tangyuan — the idea is to eat something warming to the heart and belly.

I love that dumpling jiaozi eating is to “preserve your ears” 安耳朵 from the cold, because 🥟 resemble👂!

  14. Happy winter solstice!
Onsen in a different reality from our play testing of In This World, a new game by @benrobbins

“On the winter solstice, we honor the gods in the heavens and the ghosts among us.”

-The Rites of Zhou 周禮 (2nd century BCE)

Dongzhi 冬至, rather than the new year, traditionally marked the starting point of the year’s microseasons with 9x9 days of winter.

This has been a long year — years — of ghosts.
May the days ahead bring more light.
