there’s this subtle fisheye effect that Mokumokuren sometimes uses on certain panels

it’s not too visually obnoxious, but still makes you feel disoriented and uncomfortable when taking in the scene, whether it’s meant to be scary or completely mundane

as much as they give me serious whiplash, I kind of appreciate the moments where TSHD reminds me that it’s still a manga

even in the most serious of situations, its characters can still act overdramatic and silly

it’s a practical way to break up the tension once in a while, that way the reader doesn’t feel too overwhelmed or bored by the series’ overall tone

scenes don’t necessarily need the cascading type of SFX to be effective either. those work best when the sounds overwhelm both the characters and the reader. one stand-out example early on was “Hikaru” allowing Yoshiki to reach inside of his chest for the first time

the sounds of squeaking sneakers and balls bouncing on the gym flooring are all spelled out in standard manga SFX lettering

but even so, it adds an extra layer of risk and tension as two teenagers decide to be physically intimate in a public place

Mokumokuren’s use of SFX to frame and bookend scenes is particularly interesting to me, especially when the downward drifting ones chart the emotional ups-and-downs between Yoshiki and “Hikaru”

during quiet, tranquil scenes, they’re usually far apart. after particularly tense scenes, they begin to mount. when emotions rise or intensify, they reach cacophonous levels that threaten to engulf the page
