The third national holiday of Golden Week is 'Greenery Day' (みどりの日 'Midori-no-hi').
Originally known as 'Shōwa-no-hi', from 1926-1989 the holiday celebrated the birthday of Emperor Shōwa. When the emperor died the day was rebranded 'Midori-no-hi'.

'Shōwa-no-hi' (昭和の日) is the birthday of Emperor Shōwa.

Already a holiday during the emperor's lifetime, it remained so after his death...rebranded first as 'Greenery Day'.
In 2007 'Greenery Day' (みどりの日 'Midori-no-hi') was moved to May 4th and April 29th we re-rebranded as 'Shōwa Day'.
