Nearly 3/4 of a million human beings have died as a result of the current administration’s closure of #USAID.
Imagine being a parent in a scenario in which your child’s life depended on ongoing treatment provided through USAID. You’re forced to watch your child sicken and die because some jackass in Washington cared so little about non-white, non-American lives, that they were perfectly happy let your child die to save a couple of nickels (so they could spend them on ballrooms and bombs).
This is something that has actually happened—is actually happening. Day by day, week by week, month by month. Needless, wasteful deaths that are a direct result of MAGA xenophobia.
Let’s call it what it is: a lower-case-“h” #holocaust, with Red Don in the role of Führer and Elon Musk as Reinhard Heydrich (architect of the “Final Solution”).

Even by the measure this Court loves the most —the absurd “history and tradition” doctrine — the decision in Mullin v Al Otro Lado makes no sense at all.
America’s “history and tradition” had been to enable those persecuted elsewhere to find shelter and a new home here. We even have a really big statue in NY harbor underscoring that point.
THAT is what we mean by “the American dream”. We are here because your ancestors and mine found refuge on our shores and, through hard work, made their lives and ours better than could ever have been the case where they came from.
THAT, honorable justices, is our “history and tradition”. This xenophobic and misguided decision sends the country in a new and horrifying direction.
I weep for the dream of America that died this week.

The #Iran #MOU isn't a "peace agreement"; it's a temporary cease-fire, one that leaves Iran in control of the Straits of Hormuz, releases billions of dollars they can use to fund terrorists in #Israel, #Lebanon, and around the world, and offers the US nothing—NOTHING—that we didn't have already.
What a fucking joke. The greatest, most fearsome military in the history of mankind couldn't defeat a country run by backwards religious zealots, thugs, and terrorists. Not because we're incapable, but because our "leadership" (and I use the word lightly, even ironically) is so corrupt and incompetent that in only 18 months they have turned the United States of America into a punchline.
I hope this country can survive 2.5 more years of this, and I hope that it won't take generations to fix the damage being done by this administration. But I am not optimistic about either.

@wendythedruid "Mandates same-sex college roommates"? The entire bill is repulsive, but that part is simply absurd and can't possibly survive review in the courts (according to a guy who lacks any credentials for making such an assertion; namely, me). But it is ridiculous.
The rash of legislation aimed at #trans kids—banning gender confirmation surgery, restricting bathroom choice, etc.–is clearly aimed at intimidating and humiliating children, and has to stop. (I'm less certain about rules prohibiting participation by trans athletes in gender-segregated sports: there are too few people affected, and too many questions to which I have no answer, for me to have an opinion there.)
If we had a Supreme Court that wasn't filled with Supreme Douchebags, such clearly unconstitutional (and cruel) legislation would find no safe harbor.

Unpopular take: Attacking #Iran at this time is not per se a terrible idea. The regime is incredibly weak and the Iranian ppl are begging for our support in helping them throw off the terror mullahs and help them build a free nation.

Red Don cannot be allowed to realize his threat of a Republican “takeover” of state #elections.
He is advocating for nothing less than the violent overthrow of the Constitution of the United States. Simply promoting such an idea is #sedition (18 U.S.C. § 2385) and is punishable by fines and up to 20 years in prison.

2026-01-30: It was a beautiful day for a revolution! Blue skies, warm sun, an estimated 2,000 lovely people peacefully —even joyously —protesting the fascist regime and its masked Gestapo thugs.

CBP Überfuhrer Bovino (whose name is Italian for "animal that produces prodigious quantities of bullshit"—seriously, look it up) produced the following feculent effluent at a press conference earlier today:
"[. . .] when they make the choice to vilify law enforcement, calling law enforcement names like 'Gestapo' or using the term 'kidnapping', that is a choice that is made. There are actions and consequences that come from those choices."
To which I respond:
- You can't "vilify' actual #villains.
- #Gestapo is the kindest analogy one can imagine for your organization of #fascist #terrorists by any reasonable analysis of its actions
- #Kidnapping buries the lede: the bigger story is the #incarceration, #abuse, #torture, and extra-judicial expulsion that follows. the kidnapping.
This message (and, at this point, dozens or hundreds of others I've posted) was my choice. So where are the consequences, you feckless #Nazi asshat?

Well yeah. The agency could argue the policy is not "arbitrary or capricious" due to the "need" (and I use the word loosely here) for enforcement of #immigration laws (although as the change in these policies was never subject to public review, as required (AFAIK) by the APA, they shouldn't be in effect in the first place).
But under no circumstances can they avoid constitutionally required due process, warranted search, right of assembly, right of free speech, and equal protection constraints on their behavior. It's just a non-starter.
If hundreds of these guys don't go to jail when this regime is finally ousted, that will be a damned shame and a signal to the next tinpot dictator that they can get away with anything.
