Hey babe, would you like me to fluff myself up and bob up and down for you?
I saw this pair of kererū in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens yesterday. It looks like love is in the air.

The latest short doco from #FrankFilms is an insightful, and depressing, look at why the rebuild of Christchurch city, NZ, after the earthquakes didn’t lead to the planned resurgence of inner city residents and communities. Spoiler: all the new inner city dwellings were built at the arrival of AirBnB into the city, and developers and landlords instead have been making lots of money renting out the properties to short-stay visitors. At the same time, there has been inaction by NZ’s national government to give our cities legislative powers to regulate the hotel-like businesses that are diluting real neighbourhoods.
There’s definitely a lot to think about here.

"The recent announcement that South Island-based organisations received less than 10% of the funds granted in the recent tier 3 and 4 rounds of the Arts Organisations and Group Fund was confronting and upsetting. ... I’ve talked about this on the radio and in print, as have others, but there’s more to say outside quotes and soundbites."

Morena from Ōtautahi and Whakaraupō. I had to get up early this morning to get up in the hills and swap over batteries in some of my bird recorders on the way to work.
Here's Christchurch City at sunrise and Lyttelton harbour, from Mount Pleasant in the Port Hills.
It's a pretty sweet backyard for a city.

Here's an animated movie of the accumulating korimako observations over the past 18 years along my fortnightly 10.1 km run route in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ.

This week was the 18th birthday of fortnightly run route through southwestern Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. This is my 10.1 km route where I've been counting and mapping all the birds and butterflies and assorted other species.
I started the route on 9 July 2008, while on parental leave, pushing my baby daughter around in a buggy during her afternoon nap. I wanted her to be able to know how the city's nature changes over her lifetime. I've been doing it ever since (and have added three other routes to cover other parts of the city).
In celebration of the route's 18th birthday, here are all the korimako (NZ bellbirds) I've seen and heard. Korimako have been a huge success story for the city. The native forest regeneration and pest control happening in the city's Port Hills have led to booming numbers of korimako, and the native tree plantings in the city have been attracting birds out from the hills.
As my run route has shown, within the city the korimako are mostly in areas of native tree plantings and in gardens with mature bird nectar plants (especially kōwhai, banksia, eucalyptus, and harakeke). Korimako are still largely absent from the areas of housing that don't have any of these.
(We still need many more native trees in the city if we want more native birds.)

Also, Prince has now been joined by two of Star Wars' Ugnaughts from Bespin City, on an earthquake-condemned building along Cambridge Terrace.

Here are four of an eclectic mix of street photos I took on Friday from Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, and just uploaded to Flickr.
The graffiti in Bradford Park says "You've invaded my garden, choked me with pesticides, while you just keep smiling, say it's your "God given right.""
https://www.flickr.com/photos/mollivan_jon/55375508820/Another mysterious graffiti, this one along High Street, features a man with six fingers (AI reference? Princess Bride reference? Mistake?) and he says "Tre...*36" (whatever that means).
https://www.flickr.com/photos/mollivan_jon/55374207932/Plus, there's architectural reflections in Te Pae, the new convention centre:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/mollivan_jon/55375274658/and some Borg-like crushed cubes of cans along Durham Street South.

I photographed this pair of pūtangitangi, NZ's paradise shelducks, in the centre of Ōtautahi-Christchurch city on Friday.
Perhaps they were wondering why the architect couldn't spell "BIRD" correctly.

Here are two birds from my day, a kererū in a tree at home and a korimako feeding on whaupaku flowers at work.
Also, I found what appears to be the first palm seedling seen in Lincoln, an offspring of a planted Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus fortunei, which naturalises freely further north in NZ.
All added to #iNaturalist:

After the crazy unseasonably warm weather in #Ōtautahi yesterday, it’s now raining, but still not overly cold.
I’m stuck in the home office (hopefully) getting a jump start on the week. It’s quite pleasant listening to the rain on the roof, and a korimako serenading me from a nearby tree. 😍
-
When it's raining, might as well sing! Korimako (NZ bellbirds) seem to really like singing when it's raining and we've got at least eight male birds in our garden at the moment performing a concert for us. It's magic!
(The iNaturalist link has the longer recording. This is the shorter radio edit for Mastodon. 😀)

I found this nofantail yesterday. I expect it had a near miss with something wanting to eat it. It seemed happy enough without its big tail, but I hope it grows back.

It's fair persisting down in #ōtautahi right now.
I was planning on doing some stops on the way between jobs today but I'll be heading straight from a to b instead. ⛈️☔️🌧☔️🌧☔️🌧 -
At last some rain! The korimako are happy and so am I

It been super to see Jupiter and Venus so close together in the western sky in the evening. I imagine it would have been the talk of the village of our hunter gather forebears.
Here are a couple of photos I took of the planets on my bike commute home this evening.

Get out your hot air balloons 'cause the sky surf's up!
On my bike commute in to work this morning I saw these three epic waves in the clouds over the Southern Alps. There's definitely some weather happening to the west.

Another great night of live music from Mim Jensen

We've been waking to autumn fog over the Canterbury Plains in NZ these past few days. This morning before work I set my camera on its interval timer to make a timelapse.
Here's the result. It's surprising how dynamic the fog bank is, flowing by like a river.
If you keep watching, you'll see the fog gradually retreat back to the mountains as the sun comes up.

I found a tūī in Victoria Park this afternoon!
These birds are still rare around Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, so finding one is always a treat.
It put on a grand concert for me too. Have a listen.

I know I’m probably being a big sook, but it feels way colder than 10 degrees C in #Ōtautahi at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a frost tomorrow. 🥶

We had Silent Hill weather in Ōtautahi this morning, but it’s clearing up nicely.
