From the archive — October 2011.
Brisbane Zombie Walk, 2011. Full Umbrella Corporation tactical kit — body armour, helmet, radio, patches correct, replica rifle — worn for the full CBD route in Brisbane October heat. When I raised my camera he aimed the rifle directly at my lens.
Not past it. At it. That decision changed the image from a costume photograph to a portrait. Some subjects understand the frame instinctively.

Brisbane Zombie Walk, 2011. She turned back over her shoulder while looking for someone in the crowd — not posing, not performing, genuinely looking elsewhere. That interval between performance and real attention is the thing worth waiting for at an event like this.
The black bob, the decay makeup in midday light, an expression that was entirely specific. One frame, and the photograph required nothing more from me.

Brisbane Zombie Walk, 2011. Four coordinated zombies — vampire, skeleton, schoolgirl, bride — each one a self-contained concept, all four cohering as a group without becoming uniform. That balance is harder to achieve than it looks, and the makeup work here had solved it.
Shooting without flash meant exposing for the faces and letting the dark clothing go. The grain from pushing shadows back added something a clean exposure wouldn't have.

Brisbane Zombie Walk, 2011. Zombie Ronald McDonald — and the thing is, the original character is already occupying uncomfortable territory. The clown archetype, the corporate mascot, the colour palette that doesn't quite cohere. The makeup artist hadn't subverted something benign. They had clarified something that was already pointing this direction.
The best Zombie Walk costumes are built around source material with pre-existing tension.

Curitiba (in #Brazil) is not really known for its #Carnaval, but the #ZombieWalk is a fun tradition. Lots of great costumes, this gardener with his piranha plant was one of the best.

The annual Zombie Walk had fewer participants than usual due to a technical snafu in getting the word out. Still, it was fun to take some photos of the undead who showed up. My personal highlight? Zombie Dale the Street Preacher vs. Zombie Nun. #yeg #zombie #zombiewalk #whyteave #oldstrathcona #yegphotographer
