  1. 👾 Why Zip drives dominated the 90s, then vanished almost overnight

「 Enter 1994, when a company called Iomega introduced its variant of a "superfloppy", the Zip drive. In terms of physical size, Zip disks were only slightly larger than a typical floppy, yet the initial capacity introduced in 1994 reached a whopping 100MB, which was huge number when put up against the traditional floppy disk 」

  3. Ah, the Zip drive! The floppy disk's cooler, edgier cousin that wore out its welcome faster than a dial-up connection 🚀📼. The article drones on with #nostalgia, forgetting that the real reason they vanished is nobody misses a storage device that sounds like a leaf blower. 🌪️💾

  5. Frankly, I miss PCMCIA, and ZIP drives. Computing that required putting chunky cards and cassettes and stuff into drives. Old 90s anime style computing.

I know some of you know exactly what I mean. Please send GIFs that fit that aesthetic, or pictures of your gear that fits the bill 💜

  7. Playing around with virt-manager in #opensuse. #win98se running. Still fiddle around to share an image or folder with the host linux.
#zipdrive will be the playaround, if I can't manage :)

  9. When was your last #Terminal session in #Windows3 to transfer a few driver files via xmodem protocol? My successful try is a few minutes ago and now the small and handy #HP #OmniBook #HP600C can speak with the #ZipDrive.

  11. When you did that "put an old Macintosh on the Internet" thing already in the late 1990s and nobody cared (or mainly considered you a silly stupid nerd). #macintoshplus #ppp #zipdrive

  13. Watching a film where one of the characters is saving data to a zip drive. Ah had forgotten about them. Used to store web server backups on them.

Still have one in a cupboard somewhere. Used to really like that shade of blue in the external case.

  15. Yesterdays cutting edge portable media is today's social media humor post. Issues in 1998-1999 the Iomega clik! drive was a 40mb external storage option. The card was about $250 ($473 today) and the media was $10 each or $ 0.25 per MB. My OWC 2TB CF Express card was $700 or 0.00035 per MB #clik! #iomega #zipdrive #storage #computer #electronics #history

  17. Saturday chores and I scored this #Iomega #ZipDrive at the recycling yard.🥳
I looked for the power supply, but it was nowhere to be found.🤷‍♂️
Going to try and find a compatible one.

  19. Do I know any #zipdrive experts? I have two USB zip drives (100 megabytes). On both as soon as I power them on the green and amber lights turn on, and stay on. There's a second amber led on the PCB which flashes irregularly.

The device doesn't enumerate as a USB device at all, it appears entirely dead. The eject button similarly does nothing.

Does anyone know of any common board level issues with these devices?

  21. The Iomega Zip Drive was a revolutionary storage device introduced in 1994, offering a whopping 100MB of portable storage in an era dominated by floppy disks. Though it faced stiff competition from CD-RWs and USB flash drives, the Zip Drive holds a special place in tech history for its innovation and impact on data storage solutions in the late '90s and early 2000s.

  23. Does anyone have a raw image (DD, sector image) of an "Iomega Tools" Zip disk? I'm curious how they implemented the dual Mac/PC format.

Beware: don't put it in a PC or Mac with the Iomega Tools software installed. If it sees a Tools disk, it'll delete the other partition and 'reclaim' it as free space. Guess how I ruined mine!
Imaging on Linux with "dd" should be safe.
An unmodified disk will report as being read-only.

  26. Got ‘er open, and was able to watch the #ZipDrive attempt to load the heads. It tries twice, and gives up. It doesn’t look like it’s moving far enough to get stuck on anything (as some others had reported happening), so I wonder if this is a power issue? Seems odd my #G4 #MDD wouldn’t have enough current as it’s got no spinning drives, but I’ll gonna try these drives in another PC tomorrow. #retrocomputing

  28. This doesn’t appear to be the ‘click of death’ I remember hearing about. It almost sounds like it’s trying to open the shutter twice, failing, and giving up.

  30. If you have a #ZipDrive in regular working order and still use it at least weekly for some task, say 'Hi.'
I don't need one or even want one for a project, I'm just curious about whether this old format still sees any regular use from anyone at all.

  32. Does anyone know what the format of the "Iomega Specific" SCSI mode page (mode page 2F) is, or have any documentation on the commands and mode pages for Iomega drives?
I found this in the FWB HDT manual, but it doesn't give the mode page format.
I'm trying to fix some bugs in the spinup/down/standby timer handling in the RISC OS Zip drive driver...
    Boosts appreciated.
