This is what I appreciated so much about #ZeroNet compared to the #Fediverse : I had my own site from day 1. No hosting sorcery, no domains, no instance issues, no coding even: see a site you like? Just hit the clone button & now you've got your own version.

« #ZeroNet is a #LowTech, #OpenSource media format for time-based audiovisual storytelling on the web. It uses choreographed HTML elements synchronized with audio and subtitles to offer a lightweight, sustainable, and accessible alternative to conventional video […]
Estimated data transfers:
ZERO NET uses around 0 to 3 MB per minute.
A 4K YouTube video uses around 95 to 385 MB per minute.
This is roughly ~1% of a 4K YouTube stream » 🗜️🎞️ -

Поглядел как дела у #ZeroNet - заброшено, заглохло, появились форки пытающиеся как-то оживить.

Great article. I noted FB a while back but at least in #Fediverse #SelfHosting chatter, Yunohost gets way more attention. Any idea why that is?
Re #ZeroNet, IIRC blockchain just for a user to have a unique ID not dependent on a 3rd party & rest is Bittorrent-based #P2P. Re complication, I installed & had my own ZN site in no time with no special knowledge, OS or hardware (I found Cheapskates thru ZN). I still haven't been brave enough to try selfhosting. Reverse proxy?😱

1st time free-libre online presence: #ZeroNet #P2P ~2019. Technically everything I wanted: one sign-up, no instances, no self-hosting complexities, just join or run any kind of site you wanted with a couple of clicks. But so few people, & later lead developer ghosted.
2nd time: "Liberation Day" 🤪 2025. I knew I had to liberate myself from anything US-controlled as much as possible. Joined #Lemmy before I even knew Reddit boss spez was MAGA.

Opera tried it with Unite (your browser was also a web server, serving your own pages, photos, music etc)
https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/opera-unite.html
I admit, despite being a loyal Opera user then, I never really used Unite
#ZeroNet was my easiest experience at self-hosting, sharing etc &, being distributed, avoided Unite's & self-hosting's biggest flaw: your content was still up even when your own server down/off

I used #ZeroNet #P2P ~2019, & it was great from the point of view of enabling users to do pretty much anything (social media, blogging, forums, chat, filesharing etc) without need for self-hosting or special tech skills. Just install & run, & you can do it all in your browser. A site you like? Click "Clone" & instantly have your own version of it!
(But there were so few people & so little content on it, & lead developer has since ghosted.)
We need something like that.

“ZeroNet es un mundo secreto de la web, donde los sitios no están en servidores, sino repartidos entre quienes los visitan. Cada clic ayuda a mantenerlos vivos. Es imposible de bloquear y muchos nunca sabrán que existe. Explorar ZeroNet es adentrarse en un laberinto digital lleno de rincones ocultos, información que aparece en cualquier lugar y secretos que esperan ser descubiertos.”
“ZeroNet necesita una configuración especial sin ella jamás podrás explorar la red.” ✅

IIRC the only attacks were from governments, e.g. China blocking / poisoning the nodes to prevent #Zeronet use by people inside the #GFW
But most media characterize the #DarkWeb as solely a place for wrong-doing (rather than simply "a web that requires additional software to use"), so I suppose that's a form of attack
