My jaw dropped when I first saw this photo. I can only begin to imagine the challenges that Wyman faced as he rode across Nevada. While it's true that he rode over the ties of the Transcontinental Railroad, I sure hope it wasn't the ties in this photo! By 1903, the use of ballast, or the crushed stone that you see between the ties of a railroad track, was fairly common, but there were still sections of older track that did not have ballast, as shown in this photo.

The next chapter of my electric cross-country adventure is now on Substack. I'm still in Nevada, spellbound by it's rugged beauty and gobsmacked at how George A. Wyman and others before him crossed these vast, inhospitable distances.

Time to put handguards on for the winter. These are the Barkbusters Storm with bar end mount, which are supposed to be universal, or at least they fit on a 2020 Zero SR. With these I can keep wearing my summer gloves well into October/November.
