You are not (quite) alone, #ZeroCovid people. It was good to see this story shared so much here on Mastodon. Not like the good old days of Twitter when a #Covid thread might get a thousand or more retweets, but also better in that there are no assholes or bots replying with their nonsense.
Let me use this as an excuse to offer another story, from the trip. We stayed at a number of campgrounds on the way to the wedding and back and at one of them, the rigs were squeezed much closer together than I liked. That’s not how things looked when we made the reservation.
Already stressed about having people well within “I could smell your hot dogs if you were grilling” range, I was in no mood to be sociable when Chatty Campground Guy moseyed over and started talking right next to me as I’m in the back trying to hook something up. I did not want his exhalations spewing into my van or nose one second longer than necessary.
“Ah saw yer light and…”
“Yeah, bye.”
Pause. “I saw your light and…”
“YEAH. BYE!”
He walked off without another word, which was the desired effect. Sometimes, when protecting your precious risk budget against random bozos you’ll never see again, you just gotta do what you gotta do.

A week ago, my wife and I attended a wedding 1,800 miles away from our home without setting foot on a plane or breathing any air unfiltered shared with anybody but ourselves and, for a while, a few select people who had taken the molecular #Covid tests we provided.
It was an immense #ZeroCovid challenge, and it was worth it. We got to spend time with some people very important to us and avoided infection. Our minds are refreshed and our bodies continue to be free of ever having hosted this destructive and dangerous #virus.

In another day or two, I’m going to write about my experience at a crowded social event full of unmasked people who were totally cool with my wearing an #N95. It was a challenge for a #ZeroCovid person to attend and participate in, but I’m glad I did. And several of the attendees expressed appreciation that I was there.
It helped my anxiety level that the #Covid cases in the area were about as low as they’ve been for the past several years. It sucked very much to be sitting at a table with others eating while I had a big piece of white filter material tied to my face. But I didn’t get infected, and got to see some people who are very important to me, and remain so.

Dear #ZeroCovid #Covid avoiding people who know #CovidIsNotOver even though we are (thankfully) in a pretty remarkable lull: Paradoxically, these “good” times are some of the hardest for me. My refusal to ever get infected with this damn destructive virus (if I can help it) remains unchanged. The risk is still too high for me to entertain the idea of just walking into some public space and inhaling the air that’s recently been inside unknown strangers, who have as a whole shown little but contempt for the health of others or even themselves.
I won’t do it. It would take a lull measured in years rather than months for me to do that again.
And so the isolation and alienation is worse than ever.
