  5. AAAS: "One of North America's most dangerous invasive species is hitchhiking on fish" The fish in the photo is a lake chub in Canada. In front of the red arrow is an attached zebra mussel. Native to Russia and Ukraine, 'zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are one of the most catastrophic aquatic invasive species in North America.' Responsible for billions of damage to fisheries, water treatment facilities, + other aquatic infrastructure. The chub is usually about 12 cm in length, + this is the first time a nonlarval freshwater bivalve has been seen attached to any fish. "Though boaters and others who use infested waters for recreation are warned to wash their watercraft, remove any clinging plant matter from their equipment, and discard any water they might be carrying before traveling to another body of water, those who use baitfish are likely unaware that they may be inadvertently transporting zebra mussels."  Small but extremely potent nuisance.   #canada    #zebramussel    #invasivespecies

  10. @dalebarbour Welcome! I’m from too. Also have a cottage on the shores of our inland ocean, , north of . I’m curious about your area of study with beaches. What is your current focus? It’s been a wild ride this year with erosion and high water levels. And of course, there’s and issues as well.
