One thing that amazes me with #New Zealand is how many species they've brought back from near #extinction and are continuing to grow their numbers of. A pair of takahe at #Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington have had a baby chick. They were believed to be extinct until 1948. Breeding programs were set up on sanctuary islands in the 1980s, and today there are about 500 takahe. I've seen the pair at Zealandia, who are hilariously feisty toward the keepers, and 8 or so on Tiritiri Matangi Island. This is the old valve housing at #Zealandia. Used to be a water reservoir now a large bird sanctuary. My grandparents lived in this area of #wellington and they took photos of this too.

We made it along to #Zealandia yesterday and again today - as we entered yesterday the kind person at the counter explained that our ticket was good for two days 😀.
So many amazing sights - saddlebacks, kaka, a takahē, nesting shags and three kakariki chattering in the tree near the path we were on, absolutely exciting to see them all 🥰
