since solderpunk welcoming me back to the #zaibatsu coincided with my dipping back into #nomanssky - I decided to start an in-character life/build log for Scent-Kin Cat of Calypso in #gemini space, it's only one entry so far but I'll add to it as I go! you can read it here;

#Cyberpunk used to be fun back in the day when it was just a #fantasy and #fiction. Now it gives me the #creeps when I read what we live.

There still may be some hope, if we start dismantling #BigTech (well, Big anything) as @pluralistic suggests, and explains how they got so damn big. Quite interesting that the #future is built on the 19th century monopolistic capitalism, isn’t it?#WIRED #monopoly #AntitrusLaw #zaibatsu

#Cyberpunk / #SciFi stories where giant corps are more powerful than nation states have been my fav since I first read #CountZero (my first cyberpunk book ever). I never imagined this could ever come true in my lifetime but I'm not so sure anymore. -

#### Living with the Paperclip Optimizer
One of the bugbears of the modern world is the technological #singularity — the idea that technology and artificial intelligence cross a threshold and advance to become something we do not understand and cannot control, the best interests of which do not coincide with ours. The two best known scenarios for this are known as the Grey Goo scenario, in which nanotechnology runs amuck and breaks everything — including us — down into raw materials to make more nanites, and the Paperclip Optimizer scenario, in which self-directed technology runs amuck (again) and devotes the entire world's production capacity to ever more efficiently manufacturing one thing, paperclips for example. Food, hospitals, power for homes, homes themselves, everything becomes secondary to optimizing global paperclip production.
I'm going to put it to you that we are already living in the paperclip optimizer scenario. And we didn't need advanced general artificial intelligences to do it. We used a different kind of artificial intelligences — #corporations, the #zaibatsu. And their useless, over-produced-without-end commodity is not paperclips.
It's #dollars.
A dollar doesn't really mean anything any more above the level of the individual. It's become an abstract concept, a Thing that there must always be more of. Which dilutes the value of the individual Thing, which means the value of our holdings goes down, OH NOES!!!, to which the obvious solution (assuming, of course, that you are a greed-driven idiot) is ... create more dollars, and _of course_ give them to the people who already have almost all of the dollars, because that's the purpose of the entire economy, to make certain that a tiny faction of people have as nearly as possible all of the dollars in existence. Because that's our paperclip optimization goal: Have All Of The Wealth. If the accomplishment of that goal destroys communities, destroys people's livelihoods, wrecks the planet, who cares? DOLLARS are what is important. Nothing else matters. It's not as if it's real people who you leave homeless and starving. They don't have any money, so they can't be important.
This is in no important functional way different from the paperclip optimizer scenario.
