After the devastation of the Franco-Prussian War, Monet visited the Netherlands, namely the town of Zaandam, popular with tourists at the time. Zaandam was very picturesque and Monet loved painting the carefree scenery. Meanwhile, Paris was in ruins. Perhaps this was his own way of reminding himself that the world was still a beautiful place...
