Had a fabulous end of #Winnipeg visit dinner at the #BlueMarble restaurant & lounge, at the #YWG airport. Our mgr fell sick for most of the work trip so we didn't have our customary team dinner together. 10/So this little change.org petition. This is the smallest way to help. Giving someone access to transport even WITHIN the community is powerful. Its a tool of self reliance and badly needed. 9/Even if you want to leave, travel to where your people are, anything, there is no way to get there. The fragmentation is baked in. Cases of domestic and child abuse are covered up, conversion therapies still consulted and used, and poverty swept out of view. Social supports are siloed in the churches and pity if you are a heathen wretch and dont want to be preached at in your vulnerability.

7/ Now that Ive been able to find other people like me, people I have community with who I trust and adore, I grieve the experiences I had back then, the opportunities lost and the lack of support. 6/ That said, I was a queer youth with adhd growing up in a town that felt like it was from a different era. And so focused on in group vs out group it was insane. Germans were racist against other kinds of germans. The sheer number of schisms meant there were more churches than schools libraries restaurants and social centres combined. There was no refuge or community available to me there.

5/ It was incredibly isolating. My mother is from Argentina and is anglican, and my dad who grew up here too rebelled early against the church centred life of most people around here. We lived a little bit out of town, so there werent many people around us, no way to get to friends places or even relatives places. I'm lucky I grew up in a stable home and didnt feel the need to escape.

4/ There have been all sorts of groups and schisms since and some are plain clothes or not, and theyre generally unlike the amish in that they dont reject labour saving machines, and unlike hutterites in that they do have family groups but not commune facilities. 3/ If you dont know what a mennonite is no worries Im half menno and I dont even quite know. Originally these were followers of Menno Simons in the old country, a protestant anabaptist excommunicated from the catholic church during the reformation. Central ideas include nonviolence, teetotalism, plain clothes dress, and aversion to the worldly. See pic

2/ I grew up in a community just south of this city that called itself a city long before its population was big enough to actually have the title. Its in what we call the prairie bible belt. Most of the people are mennonite or have mennonite heritage or use the word mennonite to connote their cultural group.
