The famed novelist Kawabata Yasunari (川端康成 1899-1972) wrote the book 'Sound of the Mountain' (山の音 'Yama-no-oto' 1949-54) at Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭). It's not difficult to see why he was inspired to write whilst staying here.

The 150-year old Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭) overlooks the Ōi-gawa (大堰川) in Arashiyama.
Once a 'ryōri ryokan' (料理旅館), a traditional inn priding itself on its cuisine, the buildings are now a workshop and exhibition space for 'yume kōro' dyeing (夢こうろ染).
