  1. I love the rainbow flag. It's such a strong and magical symbol. There are (at least) two versions often confused.

I'm privileged to travel for my work doing what I love. About a week ago, I went to Cascia in Italy, to hold a workshop on sensitising young minds to the challenges of equitable inclusion and participation. It was a mixture of the 10th-anniversary Social Hackathon and Peace Village. Symbolically, we carried a 25-metre "PACE" (peace) flag. It's a rainbow flag with the white letters of the word placed on it - sometimes it's even without the word. You can see how easy it is to confuse it with the pride flag. I sent the image to all my friends and acquaintances, because I felt this was a special walk, where a common appeal to peace beyond ideologies was delivered through poetry, by the youth.

Several asked what I was doing at the parade. Some ignored my message. To me, the peace flag, which Umbria has been carrying since 1961, represents camaraderie, or at least constructive acceptance among all. We're all children of the Sun's rays, after all.

That's what the event got right - prosperity built through difference, not despite it. The Hackathon part involved 8 young teams mentored by experts to compete in delivering tech solutions to build peace and tackle other Sustainable Development Goals, and twice as many smaller junior teams building applicable solutions for local communities. The Peace Village side was subtler: mindfulness, and responsibility for building and maintaining peace. With 46 nationalities in attendance, it was an enchanting 3-day event, giving hope when, at least to me, it was very much needed.

Anyone working with youth, pay attention to Umbria's Social Hackathons and C.R.E.A. Cultura Festivals. Challenging models to replicate (you need a highly driven team), but worth stealing from.

  19. Yesterday, we ran another experiment in the EU Democracy Campus.

Young people from different countries entered the same virtual space to test what happens when participation has an architecture: rooms for memory, debate, crisis, reflection, and imagining what comes next.

The most interesting part was not the VR.
It was watching democracy become something young people could practise together.

  21. I'm against banning social media for under 16's. Just outright banning doesn't make something unavailable - just unregulated and not monitored. Alcohol and vapes are still common among under 16's - especial those that are vulnerable.
I am for under 16's not being allowed on corporate socials though - as they are toxic places which do provably screw with brain development in youth - because of that algorithmic nature.
I am considering pitching an idea to a local established non-profit that I sometimes work with, who run a number of local youth clubs across the region.
It is an idea of setting up a fediverse instance for 11-15 year olds. An account can only be made in person alongside being a member of a youth club -with parent / guardian consent.
It will not be federated to the general social web, and begin as a self-contained bubble - but with the idea of other regions creating the same thing and federating together.
It would be moderated by the same volunteers / employees that run the youth clubs and social services - who are fully vetted, and follow the protocols - which already also includes moderating each other.
Perhaps even somehow make it so the kids can't post on it during school hours, and after, perhaps, 10pm?
There would of course be a set of standards expectations, or community codes of conduct, like here in the Fedi. Perhaps also running regular fun things too, that get kids thinking creatively (like what happens at the clubs anyway).
There are of course many many issues with this idea, and I can't see it actually happening just like that.
Not only is there unlikely the right fedi project to accommodate needs, but things like the online safety act potentially blocking the ability to create safe community based social networks for youth. And I'm sure there are many other issues as to why this idea might not work either. Like, what happens when someone turns 16? Are they just kicked off?
However, I do know that corporate socials are bad - but not providing good safe alternatives when attempting to protect children, actually makes them more vulnerable and unsafe. We need a way to embrace them, not outcast them.

  34. It was a very special day for participants in Transition Chipping Norton's outdoor youth project which they run in partnership with Learn2Sustain.

They recently hosted a group from the Maasai community in Kenya, cooking lunch for them, exploring each others culture and lives, and sharing some fun and games.

People from all ages and projects in the Transition group later enjoyed a campfire supper and the chance to connect with each other at an ancient stone circle near the town, watching the sunset together and reflecting on the exchange and our common humanity.

Cara Hedges from the group said it reminded everyone "what we do here affects those that are in Africa, how simple their life is and how complex we’ve made ours and just spend some time reflecting on what we can do to support all of those that we are affecting with our choices.”

  39. 4/n Today the students organised filming testimonies about the MA - will add this here when it’s edited! In the mean time, here another flyer, also designed by one of the students. I do think the fact they are voluntarily doing all this is in itself testimony to how much they appreciate the programme

@RadicalAnthro @AnnaAnthro @inquiline if you could possibly help spread this I would be super grateful. It’s not just about our jobs - this really is a wonderful programme that doesn’t exist anywhere else and it would just be 💔 for it to close.
