Too often, young people are invited to participate only after the system has already been built.
Real youth-led change begins when they can reshape the rules, not just comment on them.
Peace is not something we ask the next generation to inherit.
It is something they should be allowed to redesign.

We started with youth participation.
Then the question changed: participate in what kind of public space?
One where citizens can deliberate and influence decisions, or one where attention is manipulated, outrage is amplified, and trust is quietly dismantled?

One of the biggest myths in civic life is that feelings are somehow separate from governance, education, technology, or peacebuilding.
They aren’t.
Anger tells us where justice has failed. Fear shows us where trust has broken. Burnout reveals where the design is asking too much of the human nervous system.

Young people across cultures, languages, and political contexts are still willing to step into democracy with seriousness, curiosity, and care.
That should challenge the rest of us.
If they are ready to practice participation, disagreement, and responsibility across difference, are we willing to do the same?
Because in the end, they will inherit the world we are building now.

What if democracy wasn’t taught… but experienced?
1,000 young people stepped inside a civic metaverse to live it.

Accessibility is often treated as a feature. Something you add at the end, if there’s time, if there’s budget, if someone asks.
But what if it’s not a layer?
What if it’s the logic of the system itself? When accessibility is designed from the beginning, participation stops being selective. It becomes structural.
And that’s where democracy quietly shifts from principle to practice.

Real thinking doesn’t happen automatically.
It needs structure, psychological safety, and the right questions.
Through Youth4Peace and the EU Democracy Campus, we developed a small set of tools used in debates and workshops with 1,000+ young people.

Democracy is often discussed. It is rarely practiced across borders.
This short video takes you inside the EU Democracy Campus and its virtual parliament: a space designed for young Europeans to rehearse democratic participation together, across languages and borders.

👉 Democracy needs young people!
The effects of current decisions on long-term challenges will mainly affect those in society who have little to no voice in policy-making. Nonetheless, they are the most engaged generation in the fight for climate justice and mental health.
Learn how youth assemblies can offer a space to engage and leverage their viewpoints to shape public decisions with:
🗨 Katie Reid designed and facilitated a child participation process for Scotland’s Climate Assembly and the Children and Young People’s Assembly on Biodiversity Loss in Ireland.
💬 Che Wagner is the Programme Lead «Participation» at Pro Futuris Think + Do Tank and Co-Project manager of the «Future Council U24».
