  15. CW: #Qldpol The corrupt LNP is back in Queensland. Crooked Crisafulli is cooking the crime figures. He needs to resign.

Criminologists criticise Queensland premier's definition of crime victim

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) victim numbers used nine selected offence categories, Crisafulli uses three offence categories.
“The premier previously vowed to quit if ABS victim numbers rose above 289,657, which he cited as evidence that Queensland was in the midst of a youth crime crisis.

“Under the premier's new definition, there were 150,316 victims of crime in 2023, not 289,657.”

  17. What this lawyer says about #youthCrime is not only ‘factual’ (he ought to know what he is talking about) but he is only telling us what every informed citizen about this highly politicised issue has known for decades (ney, centuries). Youth crime is a #SocialIssue best addressed by socially responsible policies which have nothing to do with #policing or the #Courts and criminal laws.

“"The vast majority of the children I deal with come with some kind of trauma, whether that is familial or family abuse, abuse while they have been in residential care, some kind of cognitive disorder or intellectual disability… developmental delays, some kind of disadvantage, trauma."

The Melbourne lawyer says while community understanding of family violence is growing, it doesn't always publicly appreciate the long-term impacts on children.” (Source: abc.net.au/news/2025-05-31/aus?

If less of our #treasure was systematically transfered to the upper percentile of the moneyed population, there wouldn’t be so many ‘social’ drivers to youth delinquencyand crime.

#poverty and #illiteracy (or lack of education) are Political Choices made by our govt. We can change that. We can make a real difference to the socially disadvantaged portion of our society. But only if we wish to do so -- at the ballot box.

Sure, we’ve all got it tough. But why should we think we’re any better off just looking after our own interest if we leave so many people out of our decision making. We’re just perpetuating the thieving and making it worse over time. If we do nothing to stop the rorting, our great grandchildren will be youth crime statistics no matter how well we’ve done for ourselves. We’re all, basically, very selfish.

  18. NSW to review law that presumes children under 14 are incapable of evil

After a 2016 high court ruling, the conviction rates of children aged 10 to 13 have plummeted in NSW, report finds

In 2016, a high court ruling clarified doli incapax, resulting in prosecutors needing to prove the child understood they were seriously wrong when committing a crime. Since then, conviction rates of children aged 10 to 13 have plummeted.

A NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (Bocsar) report found the proportion of 10- to 13-year-olds with a proven outcome – guilty or not guilty – in the NSW children’s court tumbled from 76% in 2015-16 to 16% in 2022-23.

The prosecution withdrew charges in more than half of all cases in 2022-23, with similar patterns in Victoria and South Australia.

  19. Since the LNP first introduced the draconian and outrageously dangerous Adult Crime, Adult Time legislation, Sisters Inside have spoken out against its inherent injustice

‘The Queensland Government cannot continue to ignore the fact that this punitive approach will only cause more harm. Evidence from around the world shows that treating children as adults in the criminal legal system increases recriminalisation and perpetuates cycles of violence and disadvantage. These policies are not about public safety—they are about political expediency, fearmongering, and the continued criminalisation of Aboriginal children,’ Debbie Kilroy

  20. I'm fucking disappointed that the Guardian isn't being better than this. I know that mainstream media is always going to be used to push political agenda, but this is just so blatantly obvious with these headlines occurring within a week of each other.

Victoria isn't in a youth crime crisis.

Youth crime happens - and we know the biggest contributor to crime is poverty (something governments can address, but refuse to).

However, funding programs to address poverty and youth crime won't get votes. Scaring voters and then "tough on crime" rhetoric about "tightening bail laws" (which will put Aboriginal people's lives at risk!) gets votes.

    _____
Tyler Cawthray, an assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at Bond University, has charted the similar narrative of a crime crisis engulfing Queensland, where the Liberal National party won government in October after campaigning on an “adult time for adult crime” policy.

Cawthray said across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, youth crime has generally decreased over the last decade, including during Covid.

Victoria has one of the lowest rates of youth crime in the country, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics data, with only the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia having a rate below it.

  21. Bailed 50+ times, Re-offended less than 12hrs after bail, 4x Aggravated Burglaries, 7x Vehicle Thefts.. 15 years old.. When is this government going to wake up and write some laws that actually work? Do they need a bribe from a corporation as an incentive to do it?

If they've been bailed twice, I think the third offence onwards should be charged as an Adult, no matter what age they are.

  23. Many things I loathe about Queensland Politics, and the ‘tough on crime’ is one of them.

Canberra is relatively so much more mature.

That’s not saying much, when the international benchmark is so much higher than Australia as a whole.
