… coming onto the field or approaching the benches, but, regardless of that, it's just plain rude and embarrassing. Do not fucking complain to your kid's volunteer coaches in the middle of a game. However nice you think you're being, that is Karen behavior. Be a reasonable grown-up and talk to us afterwards if you must. Just putting that out there as a PSA. #YouthSoccer #Karen #PSA

oh yay the #YouthSoccer league just added more cool stuff for elite boys and still can't remember that average girls also exist

I am really enjoying this podcast episode about how play is incredibly important for getting to elite levels of soccer. It meshes with what I have learned through unschooling too. Kids (and adults) learn through self-directed play. Adults still have an important role but it is different than traditional coaching or teaching.

My 8 y/o son's soccer team won their second game yesterday. I am coaching the team, so it is encouraging to see them playing well and improving. They are having fun too 😃.

Things that seem to be helping at practices:
- positional games. Start the ball in various scenarios and the play a scrimmage until dead ball, then start another scenario.
- trying to do activities where everyone is involved (no waiting in lines)
- Ask the kids what they want and seek feedback

I am coaching my son's U10 (3/4 grade) soccer team, and the other coach is recommending we use the GameChanger app, https://gc.com/ . I am not enthusiastic, because it is owned by Dick's Sporting Goods, so I imagine the information in the app would go towards targeted advertising for sports equipment. Have any of you used it? What do you think about the privacy concerns with GameChanger? Are there any open source alternatives?

Road game today. I love their sign.

#YouthSoccer

A 7-1-1 start to the soccer season crashed into the harsh negative exponential math of a tournament bracket, as almost all seasons do.

Touch grass. Paint rectangles and arcs on it, fill it with kids, and roll out a ball. It's good for the soul.

#YouthSoccer

Broke through with 30 seconds remaining to salvage a 1-1 draw against a tough rival. Americans don't tend to like tied games, but I do. Sometimes the right ending is bittersweet.

#YouthSoccer

Coaching is a highly rewarding experience, but being the board member in charge of making weather decisions, in spring, in Indiana, is not among its rewards.

#YouthSoccer

In the depths of a six-game losing streak, I promised the kids I'd dye my hair purple if we won the tournament. We rallied for two wins this weekend before falling short in the final, 0-1. This is called "threading the needle."

#YouthSoccer

Two things that are good for the soul:

1. Teaching kids something you both enjoy.

2. A recurring reason to be offline.

#YouthSoccer

When you're the board member who chases parents off the field because it's storming, you are also the board member who gets to see the double rainbow.
