Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 11
I finished Your Lie in April again. These two sets of pages get me every time.
They're beautiful.
They show how connected Kōsei and Kaori are.
And how Kōsei just knows that not only does he love her, but that she's gone while he's playing.
It's such a hauntingly beautiful set of pages that just hits you so hard.
Ugh.
Glad I re-read this again.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 10
As I get closer to the end of my re-read of Your Lie in April, I'm still posting up the scenes that stuck with me. Two are serious, one is not.
Let's begin with the more serious ones.
Here's one with Tsubaki and Kōsei, a flashback to them as children. The emotions of the two of them, remembering their past, and Tsubaki recognizing her feelings for Kōsei hit in these moments as she realizes he may not be there forever, so she has to act and make her feelings known.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 9
As I re-read this volume and I'm going to share standouts.
This page shows Nagi. She's a teenager trying to improve on the piano. She's pushing herself largely because her brother ignores her (it's odd to me, but it's never presented as creepy). But the chattering about her, it hurts.
This panel showing the largely faceless rabble that see her as a cute girl, not as a serious pianist. Their words hurt as they kind of disregard her talent.
This page shows that very well.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 8
Once again, as I re-read this volume one image stood out to me.
For context, Kōsei is describing the girl he's fallen for. How incredible she is and how she inspired him. That's juxtaposed over how Kaori is in that very moment.
She is scared.
She is ill.
She is dying and she has no control over it.
He refers to her as strong at the moment we see her weeping.
It's such a well done section of the volume and really smacks you in the face emotionally.

I am going to share one page from this volume.
This one.
In this panel, Tsubaki finally understands her own feelings. It all hits her, head on.
She realizes that she's in love with Kōsei. And has been. And that's why she's not able to fully commit to her boyfriend. That's why she has such extreme emotions about him playing the piano. That's why she feels so protective over him.
She loves him.
And she can't control how she feels anymore.
Such a moment.

This is the final panel of Volume 6.
In it, Kosei is playing the piano and Hiroko is thinking. She is the reason Kosei started on the piano and she feels personally responsible for some of the pain and abuse he received from his mother. She feels responsible for the pain he feels now, and that he can't hear the music.
She knows Kosei still loves his late mother and the piano. Watching him play and throw all his emotions out there in his music hits a nerve both with Hiroko, and with me as a teared up reading these pages.

This panel hits me for some reason.
Kosei has been playing the piano more. He's been more active. He's been wallowing in his own sorrow less and Kaori thinks he looks taller.
Why? He's looking up.
It's metaphorical to a certain degree, but Kosei had been stuck in a rut of sorrow. This moment, while minor, hit something with me.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 6
As I have been trying to do, I'm going to go through impactful panels from Your Lie in April instead of rehashing each volume.
This volume, I chose three panels.
The first is a vertically aligned panel that shows the characters all sitting there, looking at the night sky. This happens right after Kosei almost drowns and explains how at the piano, this was how he felt. Like he was drowning.
But there is light in the distance. Even if the sorrow, he is finally starting to feel hope.

The second panel is so bright.
It's a moment with Kaori and Kosei where they are in a field of fireflies.
She's asking what's driving him. He says it's her. She's what's motivating him to keep on going, keep on playing the piano.
It's a sweet and sad moment. His motivation when he was little was his Mom. Now it's Kaori.
This moment, though. I remember it from the anime and in the manga, it's just as well done. If not better.
The vertical layout makes the firefly skyline look so cool and vast.
Love this moment.

Volume 5 had some moments. I narrowed it down to two I wanted to discuss.
This is the first.
Kosei is on the piano and he's hearing his mother's voice in his head saying that "Solitude is [his] punishment."
It's chilling and the shading in this scene making it appear as though the shadows are enclosing him. You can really understand his feelings in this very moment.

The second is one of a few panels where Kosei is seeing his mother.
These moments where his mother shows up in his mind to torment him. This is his curse, she says to him. Play perfectly, she says to him.
He is not and may never be over his mother's death. He really should see a therapist about it, but this is a comic...so, he deals with his emotions in a plot manner - while playing the piano.
The panels where he is seeing her are rough and eerie.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 4
I read Volumes 4 and 5 this past weekend and, once again, I wanted to talk about some striking panels.
This one is of Emi giving her performance. It is toward the end of her performance and the characters are seeing color in her music. But, also her emotions played out for all to see. Loneliness. That's what's shown here.
And, frankly, the shading, the way the black and white panel shines on the page conveys that feeling so well and I can't quite put my finger on how it does it so well.

This is another panel that is just striking to me.
The parallels between how Kaori pushes Kosei into the piano and his mother are many. However, unlike his mother, she recognizes something - what she is doing is too much.
After a while she has this revelation that she's pushed him so far without considering his feelings. This is that moment.
It's powerful because his mother never once self-reflects. All she cared about was the piano, pushing it into her son, and ensuring he moved forward.
This is different.

I finished Volume 3 of my re-read of Your Lie in April this weekend, so I wanted to again focus on individually striking panels.
This is one of them.
Here, Kosei just is playing the piano with Kaori asleep with his jacket on her.
That's the panel. The build up to this moment is adorably sweet and this panel shows that, even if he doesn't know it yet, Kosei is falling for.
Kosei playing for her.
Not for himself. Not for notoriety Not for his mother anymore.
For her.

The second moment comes VERY soon thereafter. It's when Kaori stops, turns, and says "Again" to Kosei.
She is providing something else to him as he processes his mother's death. She's providing a new focal point. Instead of focusing on the past, she's offering him a choice to look forward, look up, and look at her.
The moment is so cute and it shows the growing closeness of the two of them, even as Kosei is trying to pull away.
Yes, they're both in the first half of this volume - but they're both striking moments.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 2
Volume 2 of my annual re-read of Your Lie in April is down.
Instead of just commenting on the whole volume as I normally do, I wanted to focus in on moments that stood out.
First, Kosei seeing the ghost of his mother. It's a lot and while it's all in his head, it is presented so well and incredibly eerie. He has never fully processed the death of his mother and how that ties back to him and the piano. This moment is raw and wild, and well done.

Also, Naoshi Arakawa's art is incredible. It's so beautiful and expressive. It fully engages you in the tone of the series.
This is a series that touches on child abuse, death, family loss, terminal illness, and other heavy topics. It does so with music across every page.
I know it's imperfect and I know all of the criticisms of the series.
I love it anyway.

Re-Read - Your Lie in April, Volume 1
For the past five years now, I have read Your Lie in April annually beginning at the start of April. This marks my sixth readthrough of the entire series.
Last night (and into this morning), I read Volume 1. The early chapters set the tone very well. It hits you emotionally in a way, for me, few other manga does. And even this sixth time, parts of it still hit me emotionally again and again.
It's part of why I re-read it every April.

I totally forgot that the green-eyed cat in #YourLieInApril is a different one from the blue-eyed one that was in most of the story. Because :neocat_cry:
But yeah, I'm not sure if it's deliberately different eye colors or just the color grading, because the scene in the final episode is during sunset with an orange filter.

Finishing #YourLieInApril (which was great) has surprisingly made me miss tearing myself apart watching #Clannad. I obviously have watched some #anime prior like #Bleach, #Naruto, #ShinChan, #Doraemon, etc. played on TVs but Clannad was the first (what I considered at the time) "actual anime" I've watched, which was sometime around ~2015. I've never stopped (actively) seek for/watch anime ever since - so Clannad's always been a lil special to me for that reason. Might be time to give it a rewatch.
