So I just finished watching “You People” on Netflix and it was cringey af, as it should be, but was pretty decent. It actually got me thinking— interracial relationships do come with additional stuff to work through. Especially as you start introducing each others world to one another, I think the film did a good job towards the end of highlighting that in a tasteful way. #netflix #youpeople

I enjoyed it. Julia Louis Dreyfus was the best, Jonah Hill was good. Eddie Murphy was ok.

Question for my fellow members of "mixed race" families:

When you see a movie like #YouPeople, do you recognize your own family dynamics in it? Specifically, the cringey awkwardness of meeting differently-raced inlaws & saying the "wrong thing" to them?

Asking because this is something @dunia & I never had to deal with (though there was plenty of other, non-racial cringey stuff). It was never an issue for us.

So I'm wondering whether it's actually a common experience, or just a filmic trope.

I love pretty much everything Eddie Murphy does, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus is off the hook in this film. Completely over the top, out of touch character. Amazing.

The frustrating thing is #YouPeople *could* have been an insightful movie and still be funny, but instead it just ended up being an antisemitic mess that made all Jews ‘white’, rich and racist.

I cannot believe how good #YouPeople was. It completely nails LA culture and navigates very fraught topics with intelligence and humor.

Jonah Hill is at his best here, Lauren London is adorable and funny and they have really good chemistry. This is the kind of topical romantic comedy that Hollywood wants to make but usually isn't smart or brave enough to pull off.

Huge kudos to Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill.

#MovieRec: #YouPeople on Netflix is very, very funny. And very honest, even painfully so, at times. Standing ovation for #JonahHill & #KenyaBarris & everyone who took risks to put this film together.

It reminded me of one of my childhood favorites: Andrew Bergman’s “The In-Laws” (1979).

The affluent Brentwood Jewish thing is a pretty foreign culture to me (a middle-class Cleveland Hts Jew with Workmen’s Circle Omas & Opas). But I connected enough to blush & laugh & wince at my people.

It’s been a month, a week, a day. The world and the people in it can be unbelievably evil and cruel. So, I needed this film today. Yes, it examines race, religion and what divides us. But also what can and does connect us. And made me laugh my ass off. A new comedy classic.
