For the past couple of decades, Kennett and fellow proponents of this hypothesis have been gathering evidence that increasingly supports it, including a 'black mat' layer in the sediment at many sites across North America and Europe — indicative of widespread burning. Additionally, they have uncovered a growing list of impact proxies, which include unusually high concentrations of rare minerals that are common in comets, such as platinum and iridium, and mineral formations indicative of extremely high temperatures and pressures, such as nanodiamonds and metals and minerals that have melted, cooled, and hardened again, including metallic spherules and meltglass.
Thanks to advances in technology, the team is homing in on another proxy that is considered the crème de la crème of cosmic impact evidence: shocked quartz — grains of sand that exhibit deformations due to extreme heat and temperature. In samples from the three North American archaeological sites — Murray Springs, Blackwater Draw and Arlington Canyon — the researchers identified quartz grains with telltale cracks, some filled with melted silica. They used a variety of techniques, including electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence, to confirm that the quartz grains had been shocked at extremely high temperatures and pressures, far beyond what could have been accomplished by volcanism or ancient human activity."

"Researchers analyzed sediment cores extracted from the seafloor of Baffin Bay near Greenland, finding indicators of a cosmic impact event inside the layer that correlates to the Younger Dryas. The findings, published August 6 in the journal PLOS One, suggest that a comet—or its remnants—exploded in Earth’s atmosphere at around the same time that this 1,200-year-long cold snap began.
A controversial hypothesis
The study offers new support for the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis. In 2007, researchers proposed that fragments of a disintegrating comet or asteroid struck Earth around 12,800 years ago, triggering wildfires across North America. Such a calamity would have produced enough soot and ash to blot out the Sun and plunge the Northern Hemisphere back into a colder state.
It’s an elegant explanation, but a highly contested one. Researchers haven’t found an impact crater that would prove this event took place, so proponents largely rely on geochemical evidence found in sediment layers that date back to just before the Younger Dryas began.
Amid a lack of definitive evidence for the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis, most experts instead subscribe to the Meltwater Pulse Hypothesis, which suggests that a deluge of freshwater from the melting ice sheet that covered most of North America during the Pleistocene temporarily interfered with Earth’s heat-transporting ocean currents. Previous geochemical evidence from ocean sediment cores supports this idea, but scientists have yet to determine the exact route taken by this apparent flood.
Searching for impact clues
The authors of this latest study, led by University of South Carolina archaeologist Christopher R. Moore, suggest that both hypotheses may be true. 'The [Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis] is often cited as an alternative to the Meltwater Pulse Hypothesis,' Moore said in an interview with PLOS One. 'What many don’t understand is that the YDIH proposes the impact event (potentially involving many thousands of impacts and airbursts globally) would destabilize the glacial ice sheet in the Northern Hemisphere, leading to the collapse of massive glacial meltwater lakes and subsequently shutting down the ocean’s conveyor belt.'"

During the abrupt cool-off—the Younger Dryas event—temperatures dropped about 10 degrees Celsius in a year or less, with cooler temperatures lasting about 1,200 years. Many researchers believe that no comet was involved, and that glacial meltwater caused freshening of the Atlantic Ocean, significantly weakening currents that transport warm, tropical water northward.
In contrast, the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis posits that Earth passed through debris from a disintegrating comet, with numerous impacts and shockwaves destabilizing ice sheets and causing massive meltwater flooding that shut down key ocean currents.
However, the impact hypothesis has been less well supported, lacking any evidence from ocean sediments. To address that gap, Moore and colleagues analyzed the geochemistry of four seafloor cores from Baffin Bay, near Greenland. Radiocarbon dating suggests the cores include sediments deposited when the Younger Dryas event began.
To study them, the researchers used several techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

"In the space of just a couple of years, average temperatures abruptly dropped, resulting in temperatures as much as 14 degrees Fahrenheit cooler in some regions of the Northern Hemisphere. If a drop like that happened today, it would mean the average temperature of Miami Beach would quickly change to that of current Montreal, Canada. Layers of ice in Greenland show that this cool period in the Northern Hemisphere lasted about 1,400 years.
"This climate event, called the #YoungerDryas by scientists, marked the beginning of a decline in #IceAge #megafauna, such as #mammoth and #mastodon, eventually leading to #extinction of more than 35 genera of animals across North America. Although disputed, some research suggests that Younger Dryas #environmental changes led to a population decline among the #NativeAmericans known for their distinctive #Clovis spear points.
"Conventional geologic wisdom blames the Younger Dryas on the failure of glacial ice dams holding back huge lakes in central North America and the sudden, massive blast of freshwater they released into the north Atlantic. This freshwater influx shut down #OceanCirculation and ended up cooling the climate.
"Some geologists, however, subscribe to what is called the impact hypothesis: the idea that a fragmented #comet or #asteroid collided with the Earth 12,800 years ago and caused this abrupt climate event. Along with disrupting the glacial ice-sheet and shutting down ocean currents, this hypothesis holds that the extraterrestrial impact also triggered an 'impact winter' by setting off massive #wildfires that blocked sunlight with their smoke.
"The evidence is mounting that the cause of the Younger Dryas’ cooling climate came from outer space. My own recent fieldwork at a South Carolina lake that has been around for at least 20,000 years adds to the growing pile of evidence.
"In the White Pond samples, we did indeed find high levels of platinum. The sediments also had an unusual ratio of platinum to palladium.
"Both of these rare earth elements occur naturally in very small quantities. The fact that there was so much more platinum than palladium suggests that the extra platinum came from an outside source, such as atmospheric fallout in the aftermath of an extraterrestrial impact.
"My team also found a large increase in soot, indicative of large-scale regional wildfires. Additionally, the amount of fungal spores that are usually associated with the dung of large herbivores decreased in this layer compared to previous time periods, suggesting a sudden decline in ice-age megafauna in the region at this time."
