#YokohamaKaidashiKikou is an absolute masterpiece and I have to say it every once in a while.
There's really no #Manga like it.

Finished re-reading Yokohama Shopping Log (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou), I got the deluxe edition that has larger pages and color inserts which I highly recommend. It's a great manga, definitely one of my favorites. It's so slow and quiet but very poignant. It can be soothing and refreshing at times, and heartbreaking at others. I feel like a lot of fedi folks would enjoy it.
On a personal note, this manga hit me a lot harder when I was living in Scranton while doing an internship there, because I was exploring a new area and living in solitude much of the time. I resonated a lot with Alpha-san's journey. Now I'm more settled in Philly and my life is very lively. So I don't relate to the story on that personal level as much. It was a reminder to not give up on wandering around and exploring new places.

Waiting for the Apocalypse Hotel + Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou crossover fanart to surface, as it must if there is yet hope in this world.

@bookstodon I just finished #EarthAbides and am now rereading #YokohamaKaidashiKikou. Both are #postapocalyptic but couldn't be more different. I love #YKK it's such a sweet story, and amazing art.

I've been reading the (newly released English) Deluxe Edition of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. It's actually so relaxed that I got surprised by the ending. Which is very on brand for the story.
That's all.

#Summary for July 2024 https://no-pe.netlify.app/2024-07-summary/
TL;DR:
– #ResidentEvil0 is not inspiring, still enjoyable;
– #Anopek is nice;
– #1000xRESIST is a good, sometimes “too real”, sci-fi story;
– the #accessibility discussion is more important, but #DemonsSouls is good anyway;
– #WendellAndWild is funny, macabre, and progressive;
– #ScavengersReign is enjoyably bizarre, but not bizarre enough;
– #YokohamaKaidashiKikou is sad or optimistic, but definitely gentle. -
“Comparisons have been made between Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō and Aria, noting that they are both quiet slice-of-life stories in a futuristic setting with a similar emotional effect.”

What?! Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō is a melancholy in pictures and few words, Aqua/Aria, from what I read (not much, granted) is Azumanga Daioh with boats!

@seanpatrickphd Ones that I've found good include:
#Chihayafuru - competitive carding
#GirlsLastTour - melancholy at the end of the world
#TheEccentricFamily -- tanuki in kyoto
#TheGreatPassage -- writing a dictionary
#YokohamaKaidashiKikou - android at the end of the world
#FlyingWitch -- Kiki in modern Japan
#Mushishi - traveling exorcist-like -
Every night the game god comes to life. The screen glows, there is music. You cannot read the screen, or understand the labels. The controls do nothing.
And yet, there it is. An echo, a shadow of the things of man.
You have seen many such things on your travels. Streetlights that are trees, buildings with no doors, unreadable signposts in the middle of a forest. Even, once, something that looked almost human - it had no hands or legs, just a suggestion of where they might be, like an unfinished sculpture. But the eyes blinked, and followed you as you moved.
You make your way to a clearing, and whistle. There is a great rushing of wings, and your companion lands next to you.
"It looked like an arcade cabinet."
The great predator's head cocks to one side a little, and then gives you a small nudge. Time to fly. You climb onto its back, and launch into the air.

It worked! Sure it still needed a test harness, but she'd finally got a working eye running.
Next would be installing it in the chassis of the biomechanical robot prototype.
The A6M1 would be their first fully independent model, capable of learning and growing mentally. The M2 was already being prepared, and the A7 series was in final development.
Humanity might be dying out, but their descendants would live on.#SecretSciFiNetwork #Midjourney #WritingPrompt #SciFi #YKK #YokohamaKaidashiKikou
And if you have not read YKK, hunt it down. It is the most beautiful and gentle apocalypse you will ever find.

@jannem @schock I am reading this piece of post-apocalyptic fiction right now. Even this gentle depiction – some would say "dull" – requires a little suspension of disbelief when it comes to infrastructure and maintenance of equipment.

I've been spending my Sunday evenings slowly reading through the 2nd deluxe volume of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.
The art/setting and the slow pace makes it so comforting to read through. The manga is in no hurry to get where it's going (if it's going anywhere.) Reading it slowly and letting my eyes sort of lazily drift over the pages just fits the vibe of the manga. I find myself just sitting there and taking in the scenes.
It's been a surprise favorite since I picked up the first deluxe volume last year.

@ewdocparris
We've been flying for over eighty years now. No human here has walked on the Earth.
Our last transmission from the ground was five years ago, but our cameras confirm that there are civilisations continuing there. They may even be listening, but they do not, or cannot, talk back to us. But we are seeing some amazing changes there. And we know the robots are still there - we can track them.
Now humans are starting to grow again. This time it is a little different, though.#WritingCommunity #Midjourney #WritingPrompt #SecretSciFiNetwork

I’d heard about Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou as a manga classic for years before it was released last year in English, and had even sought out some fan translations to get some experience of it. I absolutely loved this first volume of this cozy post-apocalyptic sci fi, and felt rewarded for keeping it on my radar for so long.
It’s a slice of life comic with an ecological disaster looming in the background. The characters are super charming and the robot protagonist adds another layer of character work that enriches the story.
I was surprised to see this book was adapted by a Nova Scotian, and that a conscious choice was made to present the Kanagawa dialect as a Nova Scotian one.
Hitoshi Ashinano’s art drew me into this world; I was immersed and compelled to finish reading in one night. This is immediately among my favourite comics.
RelatedIn a future Japan, long after an environmental catastrophe, Alpha the android runs a small cafe in a seaside town. As she wonders if her absent owner will ever return, she stands witness to the twilight of humanity with coffee, a slice of watermelon, and the sound of her moon guitar. Alpha and her fellow residents enjoy the melancholy beauty of life, even as the end approaches. Savor chapters 1-24 of this beloved manga classic in English for the first time, in this deluxe five-volume set.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, a slice of life manga I've always heard people talk about, finally got its official English release. The epitome of a cozy read. Incredibly minimalist in it's nature, it's full of quiet, peaceful worldbuilding, in the twilight of a world. Alpha, the kindhearted android cafe owner, serves as a great lens to view this beautiful dying Earth. Can't wait for more volumes to be released.
