  13. Dreading the January onslaught of messages demanding that you “fix” your body so it conforms to an unrealistic ideal based on racism?

    Announcing the Shared Stories Society!

    Starting January 16 join me online Friday afternoons from 3-4:30pm Pacific Time for “media club”. This program invites participants to explore under represented voices in public health. We will examine books, zines, and more across the year. Each session will include time for grounding and self-reflection in addition to group discussion of the materials.

    January through February we’ll be reading Aubrey Gordon’s book, “What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat”, and learn how anti-fat bias harms not only fat people, but thin people as well.

    While this is listed as being for adults 60+, if you’re an adult younger than 60 and want to participate, please sign up anyway! We’ve officially expanded it to 40+, but if this is what you need and over 20, consider joining, just know the conversation may be biased to post-menopausal people.

    Fall prevention for older adults is vitally important because we’re more likely to be injured in a fall when we’re older. There are many simple changes people can make to reduce the risk of a fall.

    I offer a 5-week course called Build Better Balance that explores prevention from several different approaches. Each week I introduce new movement and mindfulness practices and we cover a safety topic. Since it’s online people can sign up from anywhere! Sessions are recorded in case you can’t make all 5 sessions.

    Cost for the full program is $10 for residents in the Portland metro area, only $14 for nonresidents! We meet for 90 minutes with a short break. Classes start at 1pm Pacific time.

  22. For the past several weeks I’ve been finalizing materials for a new fall prevention course for older adults. Because there’s overlap, the materials offer tools that can reduce incidence of motor vehicle accidents as well. Falls and MVAs are two ways that older adults can experience serious injury, particularly a traumatic brain injury (TBI), or death.

    I’ve called my program “Build Better Balance” and each class offers education about falls, safety, and risk reduction followed by meditation and movement practices. Mindfulness, Movement, and “Making Safe” are my building blocks!

    Today was the first class of the five-week series! It went very well and I’ve only spotted one big error I needed to correct! I was rushing a bit to get the first set of movement and meditation exercises in, but I just made it! One student said she really liked the hand exercises included today!
