"As #Palestinians released from Israeli imprisonment recount torture and other abuse suffered at the hands of their former captors, the Trump administration on Friday approved a new $3 billion weapons package for Israel.
"The new package, reported by Zeteo's Prem Thakker, includes nearly $2.716 billion worth of bombs and weapons guidance kits, as well as $295 million in bulldozers. The Trump administration said that 'an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale,' allowing it to bypass Congress, as the #Biden administration did on multiple occasions. However, the weapons won't be delivered until 2026 or 2027.
"From October 2023 to October 2024, Israel received a record $17.9 billion worth of U.S. arms as it waged a war of annihilation against the #GazaStrip that left more than 170,000 #Palestinians dead, maimed, or missing and millions more displaced, starved, or sickened. Israel is facing #genocide allegations in an International Court of Justice case brought by South Africa. The International Criminal Court has also issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister #YoavGallant.
"Reporting on the new package came after U.S. Sen. #BernieSanders (I-Vt.) on Monday announced an effort to block four other arms sales totaling $8.56 billion in offensive American weaponry to Israel.
"Meanwhile, some of the approximately 1,000 Palestinians released by Israel as part of a prisoner swap described grim stories of abuse by Israeli forces. The former detainees, who were arrested but never charged with any crimes, 'have returned visibly malnourished and scarred by the physical and psychological torture they say they faced in Israeli prisons,' according to The Washington Post. Some returned to what were once their homes to find them destroyed and their relatives killed or wounded by Israeli forces.
"Eyas al-Bursh, a doctor volunteering at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City when he was captured by Israeli troops, was held in Sde Teiman and the Ofer military prison in the illegally occupied West Bank for 11 months.
"'The places where we were held were harsh, sleep was impossible, and we remained handcuffed and blindfolded,' al-Bursh told the Post.
"'We endured psychological and physical torture without a single day of respite—whether through beatings, abuse, punches, or even verbal insults and humiliation,' he added.
"The #IsraelDefenseForces told the Post that it 'acts in accordance with Israeli and international law in order to protect the rights of the detainees held in the detention and questioning facilities.'"

Amnistía Internacional documenta y demuestra el «genocidio» que Israel está perpetrando en Gaza
Catorce meses después de los salvajes atentados de Hamás del 7 de octubre de 2023 en Israel que desencadenaron una sangrienta y despiadada reacción por parte de las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel en la franja de Gaza, Amnistía Internacional (AI) ha publicado un documentado informe que concluye que «Israel ha cometido y continúa cometiendo genocidio contra la población palestina de la Franja de Gaza ocupada» y hace un llamamiento a la comunidad internacional para que dejen «de fingir que son impotentes para poner fin a este genocidio, que ha sido posible cometer gracias a decenios de impunidad de las violaciones israelíes del derecho internacional».
“Los crímenes atroces cometidos el 7 de octubre de 2023 por Hamás y otros grupos armados contra israelíes y víctimas de otras nacionalidades, entre ellos homicidios masivos deliberados y toma de rehenes, no pueden justificar jamás el genocidio de Israel contra la población palestina gazatí”, afirmó en rueda de prensa Agnès Callamard, secretaria general de Amnistía Internacional. La ONG pide también que se libere sin condiciones a todas las personas civiles tomadas como rehenes y se haga rendir cuentas a Hamás y los demás grupos armados palestinos responsables de los crímenes cometidos el mencionado 7 de octubre.
Pese a los esfuerzos de Israel por impedir el trabajo de la prensa en las zonas bombardeadas y sometidas a aislamiento y privación de alimentos, agua, energía eléctrica, hospitales y cobijo, lo que ha causado hasta el pasado mes de octubre más de 42.000 personas palestinas muertas, entre ellas más de 13.300 niños y niñas, y herido a más de 97.000, AI ha realizado una investigación «sin precedentes» entre el 7 de octubre de 2023 y principios de julio de 2024 de casi 300 páginas, en la que ha entrevistado a 212 personas y ha analizado una amplia variedad de datos visuales y digitales. Analizó también declaraciones de altos cargos gubernamentales y militares, y órganos oficiales israelíes. En múltiples ocasiones, Amnistía Internacional compartió sus conclusiones con las autoridades israelíes, pero en el momento de la publicación del informe no había recibido ninguna respuesta sustantiva.
Para hacerse una idea de las extremas condiciones de inseguridad en las que AI ha hecho el trabajo de campo es preciso recordar que, según cifras del Comité para la Protección de Periodistas, hasta el 26 de noviembre habían fallecido 137 periodistas y otros trabajadores de medios de comunicación en la Franja, de los cuales 129 eran periodistas palestinos, dos israelíes y seis libaneses. A estas cifras hay que añadir 49 periodistas heridos, dos desaparecidos y 64 detenidos por el Ejército israelí.
«Los crímenes atroces cometidos el 7 de octubre de 2023 por Hamás no pueden justificar jamás el genocidio»
Callamard señaló que “Israel ha sostenido reiteradamente que sus acciones en Gaza son legítimas y están justificadas por su objetivo militar de erradicar a Hamás. Pero la intención genocida pude coexistir con los fines militares y no tiene por qué ser la única intención de Israel”.
“Teniendo en cuenta el contexto preexistente de desposesión, apartheid y ocupación militar ilícita en que se cometieron tales actos, sólo podíamos extraer una conclusión razonable, a saber: La intención de Israel es la destrucción física de la población palestina de Gaza, ya sea paralelamente a la consecución del objetivo militar de eliminar a Hamás o como medio para lograrlo”, afirmó Callamard.
Antes de llegar a su conclusión, Amnistía Internacional examinó la afirmación de Israel de que, en toda Gaza, su ejército había atacado a Hamás y otros grupos armados de manera legítima y de que la destrucción sin precedentes y la negación de ayuda humanitaria consiguientes eran el resultado de conductas ilícitas de Hamás y otros grupos armados, como ubicar a combatientes entre la población civil o desviar la ayuda. Amnistía Internacional concluyó que esta afirmación no es creíble. La presencia de Hamás cerca o dentro de zonas densamente pobladas no exime a Israel de su obligación de tomar todas las precauciones posibles para no dañar a civiles y de evitar los ataques indiscriminados o desproporcionados. Su investigación determinó que Israel había incumplido reiteradamente tal obligación y cometido numerosos crímenes de derecho internacional para los que no puede haber ninguna justificación basada en las acciones de Hamás.
AI documentó los actos de genocidio de matanza de miembros de la población palestina de Gaza y lesión grave a su integridad física o mental, examinando los resultados de investigaciones sobre 15 ataques aéreos efectuados entre el 7 de octubre de 2023 y el 20 de abril de 2024 y que mataron al menos a 334 civiles, entre ellos 141 niños y niñas, e hirieron a centenares más. La organización no encontró elementos que indicaran que alguno de estos ataques estuviera dirigido contra un objetivo militar.
La organización clama contra la «inacción absoluta y vergonzosa» de la comunidad internacional
En un caso ilustrativo del 20 de abril de 2024, un ataque aéreo israelí destruyó la casa de la familia palestina Abdelal en el barrio de Al Jneinah del este de Rafá y mató a miembros de ella de tres generaciones, incluidos 16 niños y niñas, mientras dormían.
El informe de Amnistía Internacional documenta cómo Israel sometió deliberadamente a la población palestina de Gaza a condiciones de existencia que tenían por objeto causar con el tiempo su destrucción. Estas condiciones se impusieron por medio de tres patrones de actuación simultáneos, cada uno de los cuales agravó reiteradamente los devastadores efectos de los demás. Consistían en: causar daños y destrucción en infraestructuras vitales y otros bienes indispensables para la supervivencia de la población civil; dictar reiteradamente órdenes de “evacuación” de aplicación general, arbitrarias y equívocas para someter a desplazamiento forzado a casi toda la población gazatí, y no autorizar y obstaculizar la entrada y la distribución de servicios esenciales, asistencia humanitaria y otros suministros vitales en Gaza.
“La inacción absoluta y vergonzosa de que ha dado muestras la comunidad internacional durante más de un año a la hora de presionar a Israel para que ponga fin a sus atrocidades en Gaza —primeramente, con su tardanza en pedir un alto el fuego, y después, con las continuas transferencias de armas— es y seguirá siendo una mancha que empaña nuestra conciencia colectiva”, lamentó Callamard.
“Las órdenes de detención que la Corte Penal Internacional dictó el mes pasado contra el primer ministro, Benjamin Netanyahu, y el exministro de Defensa, Yoav Gallant, de Israel por crímenes de guerra y crímenes de lesa humanidad ofrecen verdaderas esperanzas de hacer por fin justicia a las víctimas. Los Estados deben demostrar su respeto por la decisión de la Corte Penal Internacional y por los principios universales del derecho internacional deteniendo y entregando a las personas requeridas por la Corte», instó Amnistía Internacional.

Het rapport ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza, documenteert hoe Israël na de dodelijke aanvallen van Hamas in Zuid-Israël op 7 oktober 2023 met een militair offensief dood en verderf zaait onder Palestijnen in Gaza. Dit gebeurt opzettelijk en straffeloos.
‘Dit is genocide’
Amnesty Internationaal concludeert dat er sprake is van genocide. Volgens het 295 pagina’s tellende rapport maakt Israël zich schuldig aan de volgende handelingen, gepleegd met de bedoeling om de Palestijnse bevolking in Gaza geheel of gedeeltelijk als zodanig te vernietigen:
het doden van leden van de groep;
het toebrengen van ernstig lichamelijk of geestelijk letsel aan leden van de groep;
het opzettelijk aan de groep opleggen van levensvoorwaarden die gericht zijn op haar gehele of gedeeltelijke vernietiging.‘Aangezien deze daden zijn gepleegd in een al bestaande context van onteigening, apartheid en onwettige militaire bezetting, kunnen we maar één conclusie trekken: de bedoeling van Israël is de fysieke vernietiging van Palestijnen in Gaza’, zegt Agnès Callamard, secretaris-generaal van Amnesty International.
‘Ons verontrustende bewijs moet de internationale gemeenschap wakker schudden: dit is genocide. Het moet nu stoppen. De gruweldaden die Hamas en andere gewapende groeperingen op 7 oktober 2023 pleegden kunnen nooit Israëls genocide op Palestijnen in Gaza rechtvaardigen’, aldus Callamard.
Ongekende schaal van vernietiging
De acties van Israël sinds 7 oktober 2023 brengen de bevolking van Gaza aan de rand van de afgrond. Op 7 oktober 2024 waren meer dan 42.000 Palestijnen gedood, waaronder ruim 13.300 kinderen. Daarnaast waren er meer dan 97.000 gewonden. Velen van hen waren het slachtoffer van directe aanvallen of aanvallen die opzettelijk onnauwkeurig waren.
Hele steden zijn met de grond gelijkgemaakt. Noodzakelijke infrastructuur, landbouwgrond en culturele en religieuze plaatsen zijn verwoest. Grote delen van Gaza zijn daardoor onbewoonbaar. Israël veroorzaakte levensomstandigheden in Gaza die leidden tot een dodelijke mix van ondervoeding, honger en ziektes.
Op zichzelf beschouwd zijn sommige van de onderzochte daden ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen of ernstige schendingen van het oorlogsrecht. Kijkend naar het bredere beeld van Israëls militaire campagne en de optelsom van zijn beleid en daden, is, volgens het rapport, genocidale intentie de enige redelijke conclusie.
Intentie
Om de specifieke intentie van Israël om Palestijnen in Gaza fysiek te vernietigen vast te stellen, analyseerde Amnesty International het gedrag van Israël in Gaza. Amnesty bekeek de context van Israëls systeem van apartheid, de onmenselijke blokkade van Gaza en de decennialange onwettige militaire bezetting van het Palestijnse gebied.
Amnesty International concludeert dat Israël bij militaire operaties in Gaza herhaaldelijk niet alle mogelijke voorzorgsmaatregelen trof om burgers te ontzien en willekeurige of disproportionele aanvallen te vermijden. Amnesty vond geen bewijs dat daden van Hamas voldoende verklaren waarom Israël levensreddende hulp opzettelijk beperkte. Zelfs als Israël militaire doelen nastreefde, is de enige redelijke conclusie die uit het geheel aan bewijsmateriaal kan worden getrokken dat het ook probeerde Palestijnen in Gaza te vernietigen.
Veel van de door Amnesty gedocumenteerde onwettige handelingen werden voorafgegaan door uitspraken van functionarissen die daarop aandrongen. De onderzoekers beoordeelden 102 verklaringen die tussen 7 oktober 2023 en 30 juni 2024 werden afgelegd door regeringsfunctionarissen, hoge militaire officieren en leden van de Knesset, waarin werd opgeroepen tot misdaden tegen Palestijnen in Gaza of waarin ontmenselijkende en racistische retoriek werd gebruikt. 22 verklaringen van hoge functionarissen die verantwoordelijk waren voor het aansturen van het offensief leken op te roepen tot genocidale daden of rechtvaardigden deze.
Deze taal werd vaak herhaald, ook door Israëlische soldaten ter plekke. Dat blijkt uit geverifieerde video’s waarin soldaten te zien zijn die oproepen om Gaza uit te wissen of onbewoonbaar te maken en de vernietiging van Palestijnse huizen, moskeeën, scholen en universiteiten vieren.
Onmenselijke levensomstandigheden
Het rapport documenteert hoe Israël Palestijnen in Gaza opzettelijk in levensomstandigheden bracht die bedoeld zijn om hen na verloop van tijd te vernietigen. De Israëlische autoriteiten maakten hierbij gebruik van drie middelen, die elkaar herhaaldelijk versterkten:
het beschadigen en vernietigen van levens onderhoudende infrastructuur en andere objecten die onmisbaar zijn voor het overleven van de burgerbevolking;
het gebruik van ingrijpende, willekeurige en verwarrende massale “evacuatie”-bevelen om bijna de gehele Gazaanse bevolking op de vlucht te doen slaan;
het ontzeggen en belemmeren van de levering van essentiële diensten, humanitaire hulp en andere levensreddende goederen.Dit leidde tot hongersnood en de verspreiding van ziektes. Vooral jonge kinderen en zwangere vrouwen werden zwaar getroffen, met verwachte langetermijngevolgen voor hun gezondheid.
Keer op keer had Israël de kans om de humanitaire situatie in Gaza te verbeteren. Maar het weigerde dit te doen. Door de herhaalde “evacuatie”-bevelen verplaatste Israël 90 procent van de bevolking van Gaza naar steeds kleiner wordende, onveilige stukken land. De Palestijnse bevolking leeft daar onder onmenselijke omstandigheden. Sommigen van hen moesten wel tien keer vluchten.
Doden en ernstig lichamelijk of geestelijk letsel
Amnesty onderzocht ook het doden en het veroorzaken van ernstig geestelijk en lichamelijk letsel aan Palestijnen in Gaza. Bij onderzoeken naar vijftien luchtaanvallen vond Amnesty geen bewijs dat deze gericht waren op een militair doel. Hoewel deze vijftien slechts een fractie zijn van Israëls totale aantal luchtaanvallen, vertegenwoordigen zij wel een breder patroon van herhaalde directe aanvallen op burgers en burgerobjecten of opzettelijk onnauwkeurige aanvallen. De aanvallen leidden bovendien opzettelijk tot een groot aantal doden en gewonden onder de burgerbevolking.
Onderzoeksmethode
Het rapport van Amnesty International onderzoekt in detail Israëlische schendingen in Gaza gedurende de negen maanden tussen 7 oktober 2023 en begin juli 2024. De organisatie interviewde 212 mensen, onder wie Palestijnse slachtoffers en getuigen, lokale autoriteiten in Gaza en gezondheidswerkers.
Daarnaast voerden de onderzoekers veldwerk uit en analyseerden ze een uitgebreide reeks visueel en digitaal bewijs, waaronder satellietbeelden. Ook analyseerden de onderzoekers verklaringen van hoge Israëlische regerings- en legerfunctionarissen en officiële Israëlische instanties. Amnesty deelde haar bevindingen meerdere keren met de Israëlische autoriteiten. Op het moment van publicatie is er nog geen inhoudelijke reactie ontvangen.
Amnesty’s oproep
Amnesty International roept de internationale gemeenschap op alles in het werk te stellen om de genocide in Gaza te stoppen. Staten dienen ook gehoor te geven aan de recente arrestatiebevelen van het Internationaal Strafhof voor de Israëlische premier Netanyahu en de voormalige minister van defensie Yoav Gallant en commandant van de al-Qassam brigades Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri (bekend als ‘Deif’). Tevens roept Amnesty de aanklager bij het Internationaal Strafhof op om met spoed te overwegen ook strafrechtelijk onderzoek naar genocide in Gaza te starten.
Amnesty International roept daarnaast op om alle gegijzelde burgers onvoorwaardelijk vrij te laten en om Hamas en andere Palestijnse gewapende groeperingen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de misdaden van 7 oktober ter verantwoording te roepen. Amnesty verzoekt de VN-Veiligheidsraad om gerichte sancties op te leggen aan functionarissen van Israël en Hamas die het meest betrokken zijn bij misdrijven onder internationaal recht.
