Tonight to close out a pretty darn swell run was a YLT Hanukkah that was almost literally a little bit of everything. Going both big and small horns, creaky Michael Hurley folk with Peter Stampfel and Stephanie Coleman, delicate meandering, over-the-top rock outs, and an encore of super fun covers led by former Bangle Susanna Hoffs. All the Yo La Tengos and then some and all of it pretty darn swell.

Well, tonight's show was an A+, definitely my favorite of the ones I've caught so far. This guy David Mansfield out the entire show on violin and pedal steel made every song better with his presence. First hour was a psychedelic bliss-out, ambient YLT perfection with lots of oozy exploration. Second phase was a full-throttle ass-kicking. Everyone sounded amazing and the flow was exquisite. Then opener Lucinda f'in Williams (!) out for an extra poignant encore. Hanukkah Yo La Tengo at its finest.
Coincidentally, my YLT.50 according to NedBase™, which is absolutely bonkers to me. Looking forward to night #8.

Feels like most YLT Hanukkah shows I'd grade an A. Occasionally you luck out with an A+, sometimes an A-. Tonight was probably a B+ in my immediate estimation. A good show, certainly, but relatively speaking a little flat, didn't love the flow or the song selection, and the vocals showing 6th-night-in raggedness.
Very cool to have Jeff Tweedy out all night (on bass even for one song!), but not sure his kids merit the same. Definitely some great highlights though and still beats almost everything else. Two more!

Tonight: last night of the run, first show of the year, my 4th YLT Hanukkah show, they open by honoring the 40th anniversary of their first show with their original bassist and playing the first songs they ever played live. Cool!

Tonight: new year, same old song. Back to the Bowery for the final night of Hanukkah. First show of 2025 starts with opening set from Antietam. Probably should be in bed.

Another killer night at the Bowery. Tryptych show with a section focused on songs/songwriting, one with guests taking the lead, and a final meltdown that might be the strongest portion of the week so far. Not quite as good as last night (in my opinion), but a fantastic show. Wilco's Pat Sansone sitting in all night adding lots of excellent flavor. Dawn Richard singing Carole King brought the house down. Love it.

Night 3: man, they're kind of nailing it with the openers so far this run. Tonight the dreamlike Dawn Richard and Spencer Zahn, with a chorus of clarinets starting things off at Bowery Ballroom.

Wowza, night 2 was height-of-their-powers Yo La Tengo, a flowing masterclass in what the band can be at their best. Quiet to loud, spiritual to profane, concise to open-ended exploration, everything was working. With the excellent opening set and good laughs from Janeane Garafalo, these are the nights you chase going to multiple Hanukkah shows, an A+++ night at the Bowery Ballroom.

Tonight: night 2 with an inspired opening set from William Parker, Mixashawn Rozie, & Michael Wimberly. Freewheeling spiritual jazz from some masters. One of the better Hanukkah opening sets I've seen in a while. Bodes well!

Guests, covers, and jams = an "average great" first night. Flow got better as the show went on, and it's ALL about flow. Thinking I might add a night (or two?) to my current plans (4), naturally, but we'll see how things shake out.

Night one of Yo La Tengo Hanukkah kicking into gear early with a cover of "Rock and Roll All Night" with the update lyric of "I want to rock and roll eight nights, party a week and a day!"
Merry Christmas ya filthy animals!

I'm not sure I've ever gone out of my way to see Todd Barry, but he's definitely the comedian I've seen the most. Always seem to catch him with YLT and several other random times.
Tonight: let the holiday livemusic'n commence! First of N? nights at the Bowery Ballroom the next 2 weeks for the YLT Hanukkarmageddon. None other than the Sloppy Heads (feat @bourgwick) opening night one. Let's do this!

Yo La Tengo letting Steve Gunn play one of his own tunes with the rest of Foggy Notion and damn, this is special.

Tonight: how could I resist? Back at the Bowery, night 6, where I definitely just broke a personal record for most Velvet Underground songs heard in a row between last night's all-VU encore and the blistering all-VU opening set just velveted from Foggy Notion. Velvet Undergrounukkah.

Beach House > Yo La Tengo last night made for some quiet mellow magic, except for the parts that were neither quiet, mellow nor magic. Explosive at times, lovely at others, who doesn't like extra vibraphone?, and lots of Velvet in the encore, with a devastating final number. B+.
ISO one for tonight.

Loved the Yo La Tengo set last night, first half or more was so quiet and dreamy I could barely keep my eyes open after a long week/weekend. After things turned and the shredding commenced, I was too far gone and couldn't make it to the encore. Bummed I missed some covers of personal faves. Can't win em all!

Tonight: on a classic stay-at-home'r, rainy Sunday night, have a feeling we're going to get rewarded. Opener a super fun acoustic covers set from the Feelies.

After posting this, they closed with a *monster* Ohm > The Story of Yo La Tengo and... maaaaan!
Tonight: after solid opening set and a highly entertaining set from Janeane Garafalo, Yo La Tengo goes instashred on this Hanukkah Shabbos. And, not for nothing, started a full 40 minutes earlier than last night. Woot!

Definitely highlights here and there and absolutely a jolly good time as always, but, if I'm being honest, one of my least favorite YLT Hanukkah shows in a while. Obviously it's all relative and the ceiling is high. Lots of Arkestra, that's for sure!
I'll be back tomorrow and plenty excited for it.

Sun Ra Arkestra right out of the gate. Not my first choice, but definitely not my last. With Marshall Allen, in the flesh! Rocket number nine...
