Absolutely. In my mind, the #1 and #2 reasons why Americans don't drink tea is that they use crappy tasteless Lipton teas, and they don't properly BOIL the tea. (As in, using just-boiled water, not boiling the tea leaves themselves. That's just cruel. XD)

Interestingly, some teas don't take to boiling water well. #YerbaMate specifically wants 60-70 or maybe at most 80°C, IIRC.

BTW, have you ever made #SunTea? It's amazingly smooth. Just put a couple teabags in a glass jug or jar and set it outside on a sunny day (if you get those, heh) for a few hours. It tastes super smooth like cold brew, but it's much, much faster to brew. Pour it over ice and enjoy.

I got some empty teabags and fill it with nice Sadaf loosleaf black tea and a couple crushed caradmom cloves, and I add Stevia in my tumbler. Absolutely heavenly.

  2. Baldo tastes similar to Canarias in the afternoon, which I like. #yerbamate

  3. Hoy finalmente me trajeron las cosas que me hacen bien: Yerba mate y Pălincă, una bebida alcohólica de 80 grados de Transilvania.

  4. Mint #YerbaMate made terere style with "cold brew" fruit tea (hibiscus, blueberries, I think raspberries) is surprisingly nice :)

  5. With the #yerba I'm drinking I'm getting closer and closer to "just dried grass" flavour 😂 Just finished a package of Kraus, and just opened a package of Meta Mate, both dried with just hot air, without smoke as is usually done ("smoked" is a separate category, and for me leaves an aftertaste of smoked mackerel 😅)

  6. I don't know if it's a #yerba #yerbamate thing, or a #caffeine thing, but if you haven't given it enough fuel to burn (I.e. "eaten something") the results are rather unpleasant.

  8. Sorry, Uruguayans, but I think I prefer Argentine mate. My mum just got her hands on a Uruguayan blend (Abuelita), so I had to try it. The finer cut of the yerba makes for an interesting experience. The first mouth full almost felt like a kick in the teeth, it was so full on! It settled down after that, but the fine cut also makes it harder to just casually sip at. It feels like an effort to get that water flowing throught bombilla

  10. The different methods of preparation influence to a certain extent the value of the product, the mate prepared in Paraguay being considered the best, that of Oran and Paranagua very inferior. The leaves when dried are packed tightly in serons or oblong packages made of raw hides, which are then carefully sewed up. These shrink by exposure to the sun, and in a couple of days form compact parcels each containing about 200 lb of tea; in this form it keeps well.

The tea is generally prepared for use in a small silver-mounted calabash, made of the fruit of Crescendo, cujete (Cuca) or of Lagenaria (Cabaco), usually about the size of a large orange, the tapering end of the latter serving for a handle. In the top of the calabash, or mate, a circular hole about the size of a florin is made, and through this opening the tea is sucked by means of a bombilla. This instrument consists of a small tube 6 or 7 in. long, formed either of metal or a reed, which has at one end a bulb made either of extremely fine basket-work or of metal perforated with minute holes, so as to prevent the particles of the tea-leaves from being drawn up into the mouth. Some sugar and a little hot water are first placed in the gourd, the yerva [sic] is then added, and finally the vessel is filled to the brim with boiling water, or milk previously heated by a spirit lamp.

A little burnt sugar or lemon juice is sometimes added instead of milk. The beverage is then handed round to the company, each person being furnished with a bombilla. The leaves will bear steeping about three times. The infusion, if not drunk soon after it is made, rapidly turns black. Persons who are fond of mate drink it before every meal, and consume about 1 oz. of the leaves per day.

Either not just customs but chemistry itself have changed radically in the last century or the Britannica is just bullshit.

    Yes, I hear you: again?

(It's somewhere in Vol. 17 of the 11th Edition. It's in the Archive. Searchable even. You know where to find it. My notes say "pages 877-878" but that could be anything. Anyway, it's right after Master, Master and Servant, Mastodon, Matador and Matamoros, among many such delightful entries. Too tired right now to give you the exact chapter and verse. Hit me up in a few days if you really need it.)

  12. Tried both #pajarito and #pajaritosuave #yerbamate . I like a lot the #smoky flavour, but the non-suave version is a little too strong.
The suave version has a delicate taste, but I think is very caffeinated, a lot more than the classic #taragui , imho.

  14. two nights of labour but the family #yuletide gifts are finally ready!

everyone we know drinks #tea and #coffee so we wanted to give something different, south american #yerbamate. 100% none of them tried it, so we bought a matecup and bombilla straw, bundled with 6 different infused taste profiles that we've split and bagged plus one bag of fancy #chocolates.

hopefully it's not so bad. we did try one and it was pretty mild, a bit of a reminiscent of #matcha.

  15. OK, I could really get used to yerba mate I think. Question: do you generally drink mate instead of coffee or alongside it? Coffee in the morning, mate in the afternoon?

  16. CW: Strong language

    "I can't hit my caffeine"
1 liter bomboclat pussy waggon, club mate syrup!

This time I made 4 brewing iterations, first 3 with 65°C the last with 70°C. And I double filtered everything in the end with a paperless coffee filter - hope the effort was worth it. Now it's too late to try it 😅

  17. 2nd batch of my diy #clubmate journey. Several improvements so far! First of all I reduced the tea portion to 50g, so I can have more iterations with the supply I have left. Also reduced the temperature to 70°C, which made the result less bitter. 75°C was too hot. Thanks for the recommendation @FlockOfCats to make multiple brews with the same leafs to squeeze everything out. I was able to get 2,3l product out of 50g - thats insignifically less than on my first batch with 100g. #tea #yerbamate

  18. I was thinking about "tea physics". How much water do I need to get everything out the leaves when batch brewing? Example: a) 50g leaves + 1l water b) 50g leaves + 2l water. Would a and b taste the same, when b is boiled down to the same volume as a? Or if I dillute a to the volume of b? Is there a point of saturation? #tea #yerbamate
