The biggest takeaway for me from the 2025 #Edmonton election?

$800,000 couldn't win it for Cartmell.

A campaign fuelled by people and *less than 10% of that money* won it. Money can do a lot, but it couldn't do that.

Can't imagine his donors, as well as 👀 "other orders of government" that surely wanted him in the mayor's seat, will be very happy about this.

While a 30% voter turnout is pathetic, I do find it funny that not only did the conservative-types completely fail to get people to the polls to vote out the current council on issues they thought they had in the bag (crime! disorder! taxes! bike lanes! infill!),...

...but also that the people who were motivated enough to go to the polls apparently like the current council enough to re-elect almost all of the incumbents (based on the results so far).

So, I'm fairly relieved by the state of incumbent races, but it looks like the Timbits could take every open race, which doesn't bode well for future elections as incumbents move on. Hoping General can still make a comeback, it looks like that's the only one that's competitive.

Voting was fairly quick and easy for me.

One common mixup seemed to be that people went to the wrong polling place - they're using two school buildings that are next to each other in the same park, and I saw two people have to leave because they'd come to the wrong one for their address. At least they won't have had to go far.

Probably this was worsened because of the postal strike, so nobody got voter information cards.
