I'd love to see more Edmonton facilities and services take payment via the Arc card system (especially now that you can pay directly with a debit card), and incorporate the #yegtransit fare capping system.
Tap on the Arc reader to take the bus to the swimming pool - $3. Tap the Arc reader to enter the swimming pool - the regular admission price minus the $3 you just paid for the bus.

We drove downtown to attend a book launch at Audreys. A few blocks away, one Impark wanted more than $11 for 2 hours, a second location wanted more than $14. Arc card would've cost us $12, round trip. We're a big city, alright! #yegTransit

An FYI to all Edmonton folks:
The High-Level Bridge is closed for roadwork overnight this week, 9:30pm to 6am. Started yesterday, the website says it's supposed to be back to normal by Thursday. (which is a relief, there was no end date on the construction signs!)This means that the southbound #9 bus is detouring to take the Groat Road bridge. All #9 buses will likely be way off schedule after 10pm.
The bus I took home last night had extra trouble because there is also a construction road closure on 100 Ave west of 109 St, on the buses' usual detour route. Detours on detours!
The driver ended up in a dead end, talking on the radio to try to figure out an alternate route, then asked if someone could get off & spot him as he tried to do a left turn in reverse to redirect. But my awkward waving was not enough to help him make that manouever. 😬 He eventually took a loop around which included squeezing down a single lane with scaffolding taking up the other side of the street.

Any Edmonton folks have an inside scoop on the details of the "Arc Card fraud" story?
Combining information from the CBC & Journal articles, the story seems to be:
- One particular ARC fare card machine was either issuing or topping up Arc cards without processing payments.
- Someone noticed & they/others used the bug to get 300 cards worth a total of $65K.
- $45K of free fares were used before city staff cancelled these cards.
The parts not explained:
- What was the bug in the machine? My guess is faulty communication between the payment-card machine & the main computer. Like maybe you type in the wrong PIN & transaction is cancelled, but the card is still issued. But it's not clear.
- Was there actual fraud for profit, reselling these cards to unsuspecting other people? Or was it more someone telling all their friends how to get free ARC cards from this buggy machine? Based on the disinterest by police, I'm guessing the latter.

Ah, man...
Improvements to bus routes on Whyte Ave are being implemented in such a way that they're going to eliminate the "scramble" crosswalks (light-controlled crosswalks where all pedestrians in all directions walk at the same time, meaning walking diagonally is allowed).
(In order to keep moving the buses express, they don't want them ever waiting for a cross-traffic cycle plus an extended pedestrian cycle. They are adding sidewalk bump-outs & turn restrictions to help with the safety issues about drivers turning into the crosswalks.)

The buses will travel in the middle lane, mixed with cars, and stops will be at sidewalk bump-outs into the parking/patio lane so that the bus doesn't have to pull over. (There's still future plans for an express route, though?)

Discovered by accident today that debit/credit tap is now accepted on Edmonton transit arc terminals. :o
It even honors fare caps if you use the same card consistently!
Definitely thought this would take longer!

But both of those stores, relatively convenient to get to, are in neighbourhoods that I've never been. I would have never had reason to know they were there if I hadn't looked them up.
I could take the #9 all the way to the far northside. Never been there. I could see if there are actually any clear waters in Eaux Claires, which I know only as the terminus of the bus route.
Or I could take a shorter but 2-bus route to the Royal Gardens / Greenfield neighbourhoods just south of the Whitemud expressway. Not that far beyond Southgate Mall where I walk/bus regularly, but not on the route to anywhere I'd be going, except I guess now for the grocery store in the neighbourhood strip mall. It's even close enough (<4km) that I could walk one way if the weather was nice & only bus back. Look, there's a pedestrian overpass across the expressway, so I wouldn't even have to walk along the noisy roads. I've surely driven under that walkway, but it looks nicer from the pedestrian view!

I've been pretty negative about the ets route redesign that happened a couple years ago, but today I discovered 1 (one) thing that it improved: there's now finally a bus route that connects the "good" part of downtown to the "good" part of Whyte Ave more or less directly (the 701).
Previously you could only really get from the railtown park part of downtown to the university side of Whyte Ave.

Wow someone really fucked up the Edmonton transit data today. There's a service outage on the capital line between South campus and health sciences, but the rest of the line is running. But both Transit(tm) and Google maps reports *the entire line* as being closed all the way to the end of the line.
So hi from a train that does not exist according to the Internet!

My Valley Line train is dystopically repeating safety & security messages literally every 30 seconds and it shouldn't come as any surprise that it actually makes me feel more uncomfortable than more safe or secure.

I'm glad the ETS ticket/arc refill kiosks take credit and debit now (finally!!) but whoever placed the credit tap reader on them needs to take some industrial design and/or ux refreshers because it sure is A Choice to put it as far from the Arc reader as possible.

Edmonton transit ridership & projections show that usage is now above what it was before Covid & the switch to work-from-home.
But with population having increased ~18% from 2019 to 2024, overall usage per capita is still down. But weekend usage is way up. The shift away from commuters affects transit planning in all sorts of ways beyond overall numbers. More cross-town routes. More off-peak service.
